I do not own Gravity Falls.
"Dipper," Mabel whispered through the darkness.
"What?" he responded slowly, his voice lagging with exhaustion.
"I think I heard something outside the tent!"
"Mabel, the forest is full of animals, there is going to be some weird sounds outside the tent."
"Says mister journal about weird stuff all over!" Mabel responded heatedly, sitting up in her sleeping bag.
"Can't we talk about this in the morning?" he groaned, turning towards the side of the tent and away from his twin.
"But what if it's the gnomes, Dipper?" she asked urgently.
"I really don't think it's the gnomes, Mabel."
"But what if?"
"Go to sleep."
She reluctantly started to lay down, before gasping and jumping onto Dipper's sleeping bag.
"What if it's Gideon?"
Growling quietly, Dipper sat up and turned towards Mabel, which wasn't very hard seeing as she was sitting on top of his legs.
"Mabel, if it was Gideon, I think he would have came in already."
"Maybe he's waiting for us to fall asleep!" she whispered dramatically, eyes darting around the tent.
"There is one large problem with that theory, Mabel," Dipper spoke through clenched teeth.
"What's that?"
"We were asleep, until you felt the need to wake up and start bothering me!" he was on the verge of yelling as he finished the sentence. However, his expression softened as he saw Mabel look away, disheartened.
"I was just a little worried about whatever it was, okay? So much weird stuff has happened here that I was little freaked out, okay? And after getting Gideon arrested, he probably hates us even more now, so even the thought of him being here..."
Dipper hesitantly reached out a hand, gently putting it on his sister's shoulder.
"Hey, don't worry. I'm sure if it was something dangerous, we'd know by now. And I doubt Gideon's getting out of jail anytime soon, so you don't even have to think about that."
"... Can you still check it out?" she asked with pleading eyes.
Eyes that, even with growing up with her, Dipper could not refuse.
"Oh, fine," he grumbled, pulling himself out of his sleeping bag, grabbing a flashlight, and unzipping the entrance to the tent. As he stepped out into the cold darkness, he flicked the flashlight on, sweeping it through the surrounding area. In the distance, he could just make out the Mystery Shack, which they had made sure not to camp out to far from, on their Grunkle Stan's rather vague instructions.
Yet, he did not see anything that would be anything resembling dangerous.
"It was just some animal, Mabel," he said as he reentered the tent.
"I thought for sure I heard laughter," she mused as she returned to her sleeping bag.
"Maybe it was in your dream."
"Yeah..."
As they both drifted back off to sleep, a triangular shadow passed over their tent and into the night sky.
