Roy and Reza stepped off the train like they had a hundred times. Things were heavier now with the philosopher stone problem, but it was still their old home town. It could make any situation more comfortable. It was where Hawkeye's father taught Roy flame alchemy. It was where they wasted away their school days. It was where they spent their last drops of innocence before the war in Ishval.
Roy reached out his arm. He laced his fingers through Reza's. When their eyes met formality slipped away. She wasn't his subordinate. He wasn't her ambitious and fearless colonel. Not here.
Their free hands lugged bags as they crossed the village streets. It was the only part of them that wasn't weightless.
"The times are certainly changing. I can't believe your father is letting us share a room." Roy tossed a few outfits out of his bag and into his side of the dresser.
"Well he does think you're gay." Riza said offhand. She was neatly folding her own clothing at the end of their bed.
Roy nearly fell over. "Oh."
"I'm kidding." Riza chuckled. "He thinks you're going to marry me."
"Oh!" Roy shut his suitcase and sat next to Riza. "That's not a terribly crazy idea, is it?"
"Maybe not terribly."
"But crazy."
"Yes, sir."
Roy flicked a blonde strand away from Riza's eyes. "We're on vacation. You know you don't have to call me sir."
"I think it's kind of hot." Riza leaned into Roy.
"Riza!"
"Dad!" Riza flipped around. A large blond stood in the doorway. He marched over and hugged both officers.
"It's been too long kids!"
Roy gasped for breath. "Thank you sir."
Mr. Hawkeye raised an eyebrow. "You're on vacation. You know you don't have to call me sir."
Roy and Riza turned the same shade of pink.
Two hours and several more awkward encounters later Mustang was leading Riza blindfolded into the woods.
"Where are you taking me?" Riza sounded both annoyed and intrigued.
"Patience." Roy wrapped his hands around her waist to guide her around a boulder.
"Sir." Riza squeaked.
"It's not misconduct if we're not on duty."
Riza rolled her eyes under the blindfold.
"We're here."Roy pulled the cloth away.
Riza was stunned. They were at the pond where they had first met.
She had just been a kid then. She was playing with a boat made out of sticks and leaves. Some older boys had smashed it up. Roy heard the commotion and stepped in. They had pushed him in the water for defending her. Riza did the only thing she could think of. She beat them up.
"I don't think I could have made it this far without you." Roy had slipped onto one knee while Riza had been lost in thought.
"Roy, don't. You're not one for kneeling."
Roy smirked. "Let me finish. I couldn't have made it this far without you. And I wouldn't want to. We have a lot of work ahead of us. But when it's all over, and I'm fuhrer, will you be by my side?"
"Of course." Riza stooped down to be at Roy's level.
"As my wife?"
"I-I…."
"I got a ring." Roy pulled a little silver object out of his pocket. "Do I need to make it an order?" He joked.
Riza was too afraid to speak for fear of crying. She just nodded her head and held out her hand for the ring.
