Butterfly
A small girl danced through the garden. Her soft blond curls gleamed golden in the sun the sun and she radiated with happiness.
A bright blue butterfly danced right before the girl, always a few scant inches from her outstretched hands.
With a resounding clap the girl's hands closed around the delicate creature. With a whoop of glee she spread her wings and took off into the air, her hands cupped carefully in front of her.
"Max! Max!" she called, kicking the door shut behind her. She held out her hands to the tall blond girl on the couch. "Look what I found!"
A look of amusement crossed Max's face. "What, sweetie?"
"A butterfly! I catched it! Can I go show Gazzy?"
Max frowned. "Why, Angel?" she said, brushing a lock of hair behind the little girl's ear. "Why cage it up?"
The older girl's question hit Angel like a train.
Because it's special, and beautiful…but didn't the whitecoats cage us for that? Maybe the butterfly wants to be free, too?
Max's soft voice reached her ears." Take it outside and set it free" she said.
Angel turned around and slowly walked outside, all her exuberance forgotten. She stood in the shadow of the doorway and hesitated for a moment, then gently uncapped her hands.
The butterfly lay feeble and floppy in her palm.
It did not fly away.
The little girl's heart broke.
"Please, butterfly" she whispered. "Get up. Fly away. Be okay. Please."
The butterfly's wings fluttered.
"Go" she said. "Your flock is waiting for you, butterfly."
She threw her hands up into the air, and the butterfly flew off.
Angel watched it until the blue butterfly became a speck far off in the distance, then disappeared into the bright blue sky.
Suddenly she laughed, her exuberance and joy evident once more.
Angel twirled to face the door and ran inside.
