The light from the moon shimmered on the waves that gently lapped against the cliff's face. The sea was calm tonight and the sky was clear. Konan stared down from her lofty perch and watched as a tear dripped from her chin and plummeted down, getting lost in the vastness of the ocean.
"Would you care if I died?" she whispered, her arms wrapped tightly around herself and her breath visible in the frigid air.
"Who are you talking to?" asked a man from behind her.
She gasped and looked around to see Itachi standing there, his hands in his pockets.
Embarrassed, she used her palms to roughly wipe the tears from her cheeks, "No one," she muttered, turning to the sea again.
He came up beside her and stared calmly ahead.
"Why are you crying?" he asked softly.
At his gentle tone, tears welled up in her eyes again. He turned his face towards her and surveyed her quietly.
"I…," she swallowed, "I'm useless," she choked out, sniffling.
"Why would you say that?" Itachi questioned, his eyes prying.
She blinked rapidly and lowered her head so that her short hair swung in front of her face, "Hidan says so every day."
"Hidan says many things. Most of which are complete nonsense," Itachi replied, brushing her hair behind her ear.
Konan was startled by this gesture. She looked at him quickly, "Itachi?" she asked. She was surprised to find that the idea of him finding her attractive pleased her. She had never paid that much attention to him, since he was so quiet, but here in the moonlight, she noticed how handsome the Uchiha was.
"In this case, however," he continued silkily, wrapping his long fingers around her delicate wrist, leaning forward as though to kiss her, "he is absolutely right."
Konan gasped and her stomach twisted. Itachi's thin lips curved up somewhat and, with a quick push, he threw over the edge.
She stared up at him as she fell, her throat tightened to the extent that she could not scream. The moonlight made his smooth, pale skin gleam and his dark eyes seemed darker by contrast. He raised a single hand in farewell and she managed to scream; only a second before her body hit the waves and was broken apart.
At the funeral, Hidan was the only one to cry.
