Catherine closed the paper, after reading the article Mobley had put in about the construction case. She turned to Gil, who was quietly absorbed in a book.

"You're not surprised."

He looked over at her, putting his book down. "No. Mobley told me how it would be. I know I'm not a hero. I don't aspire to be one."

Catherine put the paper aside. "Gil, you have no idea how much of a hero you really are."

Gil looked at her, surprised. "I don't understand."

"You're a hero for the victims. A hero for the families you bring closure to." She moved closer. "You're a hero to Warrick and Nick, for helping them when they needed it. You're a hero to Sara…for reasons I'd rather not get into. You're a hero to Greg…even though he'd never admit it." She rested her hand on his chest. "And you're my hero."

His eyes locked onto hers. "I am? I mean…I don't mind about the rest…but I'm your hero."

Catherine's hands cupped his face. "Gil, try and get this through your handsome but thick head. You helped me off coke. You encouraged me to get out of my marriage to Eddie. You got me out of dancing. You mentored me. You've always got my back. You helped me when I needed you. You were there when Lindsey was born. You've always been there for me." She smiled broadly. "I love you so much. And you're my hero."

Gil smiled, holding her tight to him. "And I love you back, Catherine. So very much."

They kissed deeply, Catherine tugging him to her until he lay above her, caressing her cheek.

"Cath?"

"Mhm?"

"You're my hero. For so many reasons."

"Really?"

"Really."

Catherine smiled broadly at him, kissing him again. Gil returned the kiss, his hands holding her tight against him.

The real heroes.
