No Brains in the Bonehead
Dr. Temperance Brennan was sitting in her office the a few days later. Brennan was just putting the finishing touches on a report for the previous case. She expected that Booth was spending time with Hannah, his girlfriend. She just moved in with him.
She heard a knock on the door. "Hey Bones," greeted Booth.
"Hi, Booth," answered Brennan.
"What'cha doing?" asked Booth.
"Finishing a file," answered Brennan.
"On 'Richie the V'?" asked Booth.
"Yup," answered Brennan, who was now sending the file to print.
Booth couldn't take this. He noticed how cold Brennan's tone was. "Something wrong?" asked Booth.
"No." Brennan looked back at him. "How's Hannah?" she asked.
"Fine," said Booth, surprised that she even asked. "And you've been distant these past few days," added Booth, staring at her.
"Distant?" asked Brennan, confused.
"Yeah, you've been distant," confirmed Booth.
"Don't be ridiculous," ordered Brennan. "I've been right here."
"You know what I mean," said Booth.
"No, I don't."
"Sweets would call this building up an emotional wall," said Booth. "Every time I get together with you outside of work, that's all you want to talk about...work. We used to talk about much more than that. I don't think I've really talked to you since I came home. Stop being so distant and talk to me."
"I have no time for psychology," said Brennan, picking up the printed file, placing it in a manila folder, and standing up to leave her office. "I need to take this to Cam."
"I'll do it," said Booth. Before Brennan could protest, he snatched the file from her hands and started to leave. "Dinner tonight. You, me, and Hannah. Be there."
"Booth-," protested Brennan.
"Be there," ordered Booth. He turned back around and continued out the door. "And don't say you'll be a third wheel, because Hannah wants you there as well as I do."
"Was dinner Hannah's idea or yours?" asked Brennan.
"What?" asked Booth, turning back to face her.
"You heard me," observed Brennan. "Was dinner her idea or yours?"
Booth didn't answer her. Instead, he pressed back on to Cam's office.
Brennan sat back down at her desk. Hannah...she liked Hannah. And Hannah was trying very hard to build a relationship with Brennan. But Booth...he wasn't Booth anymore. He changed.
Brennan let a few tears escape her eyes. Her heart was breaking. She knew she liked Hannah. She wanted to build a relationship with Hannah, too. But she was mad at Booth. She was mad that Booth was changing and becoming one of those men who tries to revolve everything around his girlfriend. She hated that.
There was also another thing she hated. She spent seven months overseas...away from Booth. Her feelings for Booth developed even more. But she was mad. Not mad at Hannah. She couldn't be. It wasn't her fault she ended up with Booth. It just happened. But she was mad Booth chose Hannah over her.
She wasn't showing up for dinner.
