Suddenly understanding humans' speech and coming to see their world as they did had been disconcerting, to say the least. But Bluebell and the others got used to that. The real trouble started when they all began to glow.
Little Kirsty was delighted, but the mother, not so much. Bluebell found herself whisked away and driven back to the lab she loathed so much. Terrified, she escaped from the cage when the woman was distracted for a moment in the parking lot, and dashed into the nearby thicket.
The eerie fluorescent glow was definitely a problem at night in the woods, and avoiding the local feral dog was a particular challenge. But then Bluebell learned to use one other newfound talent.
Soon after her escape, when two men approached her hiding place in the hollow, she discovered that she could make them imagine that the dog that was tracking her was a ferocious hound hunting specially for them instead. When, persistent, the men returned later with others, in their heads she wove a complex narrative of murder, toxic vapors, and revenge, and then turned their attention again to the dog. The men were helpless under the spell of her compelling tale, and when their heads cleared, the dog lay dead, and Bluebell knew that she had become a true plot bunny.
