Screams and howls erupted from Casey as Vin and Chris held her tight. Buck kept JD back. Nettie looked on with tearful eyes, but she accepted that there was nothing else that could be done. Nathan and Josiah threw more holy water on the writhing woman as Josiah kept chanting and spellcrafting.
Finally, after what seemed like ages, a huge, smokey, and pure black substance exploded from Casey. Her body went limp.
Josiah closed his eyes. No matter how great the trial to free the soul or accomplishment against the Demon, he still felt like a failure in the end.
Chris let JD gather Casey into his arms, and Buck held both JD and Casey as the Kid wept openly. Vin embraced Nettie, who finally bawled. Chris hung his head and sank back into the shadows. The preacher walked away, unable to look at any of his family. Nathan trailed silently behind him.
Nettie looked up from Vin's comforting arms. She managed to stop crying long enough to call to the healer whose skills had proved useless when the Demon had taken control of her niece. "Tell him thanks for saving her soul. Casey'd thank him if she could."
"I will."
