Vin sighed and wiped sweat from his brow as he saw Nettie hurrying to him with a cup and a pitcher. His bared muscles heaved. Sweat glistened on them from where the sun had been baking him.
"It's about time you took a break." Nettie turned as she heard a clanging racket coming from her house. "I'd better go see what Casey's done gotten herself into, but you sit for a spell and drink some o' my tea."
"Yes, ma'am," Vin drawled. He picked up the glass from where she'd sat it down as she rushed off.
Minutes later, Nettie returned. She gasped when she saw the dishes. "Landsakes, child! That was a whole pitcher!"
"Sorry, ma'am." Vin gave her a sheepish smile. "I was thirsty."
"I can see that." She grinned. "Well, no matter. It just gives me an excuse to make more." And maybe a couple of pies while she was at it. Feeding the boy was the least she could do for Vin after all he was always doing for her.
"You don't have to do that for me, ma'am."
"And you don't have to chop that wood, but I 'preciate it."
They smiled. Each held their friendship close to their hearts.
