Nate Archibald didn't deserve her. That much was clear when they first met at the tender age of five. She was pure elegance in her chocolate brown ringlets that framed her fox like face with a bold red headband bringing out her rosy cheeks. All he could do is stare at her as his golden haired friend Serena van der Woodsen giggled at one of Chuck Bass' jokes beside him. He had to know this girl, but he couldn't think of anything to say to her. He felt worthless, as if she could do so much better than him, and they hadn't even formally met.
"Talk to her, Natie," Serena's angelic voice whispered into his ear. She then ran off to play with Chuck, leaving him standing in the middle of the playground like a lost puppy. He felt like crying, and nervously bit his lip as he eyed the object of his affection approaching him.
She was prettier in person and not as pale as he had expected. She had dark blue eyes that appeared navy with pink lips that formed the perfect pout. "I'm Blair Cornelia Waldorf but I go by Blair 'cause I don't like my name," she stated as she smiled at him. "Play with me." Her small hand reached out to take his and before he could introduce himself to her, she'd already led him to the swing set. "Push me!" Her voice was demanding but he didn't mind. A dopey smile slowly grew on his face.
"Higher!" Blair began to giggle and Nate found that it wasn't as forced as Serena's. He'd made Blair just by pushing her on the swing. "What's your name," she yelled as he pushed her again, her hair hitting him in the face each time his hands gently pushed her back.
Nate took ahold of the swing and faced Blair's surprised face. "I-I'm Nate. Nathaniel Archibald. Uh, my fwiends call me Natie."
"I like that name," she said with a smirk. She then took both of his hands in her own and kissed him softly on the lips. When she backed away, Nate stared at her wide eyed. "That's what grown ups do when they want to be together," she said matter of factly.
"Okay," he said happily, his fingers holding his lips as he wondered if what just happened was a dream.
They stood there and stared into each others eyes. "Your eyes are green, Natie. Like the color of money."
Nate smiled and nodded, agreeing with her. "Your eyes are blue, like the color of the ocean," he remarked.
Blair squeezed his hand and took in his facial features. He was so cute to her with his emerald eyes and golden-brown hair. And he was nice to her, unlike that nasty Chuck Bass who she avoided like the plague. It would be so nice to wake up every day with Nate by her side. They would go to Yale, a word she'd heard her father say a lot of times, and then marry in a huge castle somewhere romantic.
As the teacher signaled that it was time to go, Nate walked towards the line with Blair's hand still holding his. "Hey, Blair," he whispered to her.
"Yeah?"
"Maybe one day we could get married, and you could be Blair Archibald. Maybe you'd like that name more."
She stared at him with her lips parted as if she couldn't believe he said that. Then, she hugged him tightly and kissed his cheek. "Oh, that'd be great. I'll work on the wedding invitations now."
Nate held his cheek with a grin on his face as Serena and Chuck came by holding hands. "What's the matta with you, Archibald," Chuck asked uninterested.
"I deserve her," he said dreamily.
