Facing Fears
I didn't want to face my fear of heights, but she pulled me over to the edge anyway. Rikki was always the aggressive type of girl and was surprised to see that she had a soft side. My breathing quickened and I could feel my heart rate increase when I got closer to the edge. I closed my eyes not wanting to look down.
"Now pretend I'm a painting or something you admire," she said.
I opened my eyes to look at her. Paintings were not really my thing and she could tell by the look I gave her.
"Or some speedboat or stupid car," she clarified. "Something that makes you happy."
I tried to focus and think of my boat, but it didn't work. All I could think about was the far distance to fall below me. I looked back at Rikki who was smiling at me. Her eyes so caring and beautiful. Something about them made me calm. I didn't even realize that I had begun to breath normally and my heart stopped racing.
Never would I have suspected that Rikki Chadwick would be the person that would make me most happy. She was always more of a loner even with her small circle of friends and yet she understood me. She knew that the way I act in front of my friends is just to keep people away. Rikki was the only one to get that.
"Felling better?" she asked, smiling bigger when she realized I was more calm.
"Yeah," I said, returning the smile. I knew my father would not like Rikki and I would be teased by my friends if we started dating. Still I knew that she was someone I could be happy with, and that was another fear I needed to face.
