The End of the Beginning
Shawn can't breathe. Something is crushing him.
"Mom," he wheezes, trying to move. "Mom…Mom."
Bright lights shine on his face. He winces and turns away.
"Shawn!"
Pressure on his shoulders.
"Dad?"
Something warm and sticky spreads beneath him. He's cold.
"I'm here, Shawn." Desperate tone, wavering with fear, worry. "I'm here."
"Where's Mom?"
"She's fine. She's safe." Hesitation. "Shawn, you're…you're hurt pretty bad."
"I can't breathe." Lights growing dimmer, vision fuzzier. "What happened?"
"She had a second trigger. We got your mother away from the bomb, but you were too close…Shawn, we can't move you."
Unfamiliar huskiness creeps into that tone.
"Dad, I can't breathe," he cries, whimpering as hot tears scald his eyes and cheeks. "I can't move."
Stifled sob. "I know, Son." Whisper. "Part of the car…It landed on top of you. If we move it, you'll…The paramedics won't be able to stop the bleeding in time." Silence. "Shawn?"
"It's okay." Gurgle in the back of his throat. Taste of metal on his tongue. "It's okay."
"It wasn't…It wasn't supposed to happen like this." Fingers combing through his hair, soothing. "You can't just—"
"Dad?"
Shuddered gasp. Audible swallow. "Yea, Shawn?"
"Am I a bad person?" His underlying fear—not death but damnation. "For lying. Do people go to hell for that?"
"God, Shawn." Tearful words. Sniffle. "Not you. Heaven doesn't turn away good people like you."
"Even though I lied?" Tired. So very tired.
"Sometimes lying is necessary for the greater good."
Liquid wheeze. "Getting philosophical, are we?"
Sad chuckle. "Yea, guess I am." Trembling fingers on his cheek. "You're a good person, Shawn." Deep breath. "I love you. And so does your mother."
"Love you both, too."
Lips against his forehead.
No more breath. No more cold.
No more.
AN:Oi, it hurt to write this...But on to less depressing things.
So, how cool was it that James Roday actually co-wrote this episode? Totally amazing. Can't even believe it. Watched it the first time then waited around to watch the repeat ep. FACT.
