This is just a little drabble I did after finishing Knives and Pens. x3 It's not very long, but I thought someone might enjoy reading it. xD Anyway, I don't own Death Note, but Heidi is my character.

"L, are you ready to go?"

Her voice was infinitely more perfect than he could have imagined. The world came back into focus, and he saw Heidi poking her head out of the car. That heart-breaking grin was on her face, and he felt a smile come onto his lips in response.

"Helloooo, earth to L!" she called. "What're you doing over there, watching the grass grow? Let's go already!"

He made his way over, sliding into the car next to her without a second thought. Closing the door, he felt her arms wrap around his midsection and her cheek resting on his chest. For once, he sat like a normal person – if only to make room for the blonde cuddling into him.

"Took you long enough," she told him, leaning up and kissing his cheek. "For a while, I thought I was going to have to go on this vacation alone!"

He blinked, looking at her. "Vacation?" he repeated. "What about the Kira case?"

Heidi gave L a most bewildered expression, her tiny small perplexed.

"Kira case?" It was her turn to repeat his words now. "L, we solved the Kira case! Don't you remember?"

That was when L knew he was dreaming. He should have known when he saw Heidi at first; but he had been blissful in deceiving himself that she was still alive. The Heidi he held was not real, instead a figment of his imagination. Of his heart.

"L?" Heidi asked, gently touching his cheek. "What's the matter?"

"You're not real," he murmured, looking at her absently. "You don't exist."

She looked hurt. "What do you mean, I don't exist?" she demanded, though her voice was more wounded than angry. "Of course I do! L, if this is a joke of yours, it's not very funny!"

L opened the car door, gently pulling away. "I'm sorry," his dream self apologized. "You're not real. It can't be you." He set her hands back on her lap, resenting the tears that prickled at the dream Heidi's eyes.

"L, stop joking, it isn't funny," she protested meekly, reaching for him, but he stepped out of the car and closed the door.

"I'm sorry," he repeated. His heart broke at the tears that fell down her cheeks; he wanted so badly to go with her, to lose himself in ignorance for just a little while, to wipe those tears away and imagine they had never existed. But he couldn't delude himself like this. It wasn't right.

"L, don't leave," she pleaded miserably through the window, spreading her fingers along the glass. With a sad smile, he touched her fingers through the glass.

"I love you," he mouthed, and the car began moving away, carrying the sweet dream that he couldn't partake in. Heidi watched him through the back window, pressing a hand against it, as if she might reach out to him. L gave a small smile and waved until she was out of sight.
