Disclaimer: The character is not mine... though, this character could be anyone really!
A/N: I wrote this during a staff PD session on creative writing - was an awesome session - I learnt a lot about the structure of a story... so I hope someone gets a kick out of it. It's not Caskett... not it's Beckett. So that's close.
Heat shimmered over the surface of the road and clouds of steam rose from the drains. The sun beat down on the melting tarseal as passersby dodged the ever deepening pools of darkness. Without warning the sun slunk behind a passing cloud, and the city was granted a fleeting moment of respite. Almost in unison the entire city fell silent and then a chorus of relieved sighs echoed off the towering buildings.
Before she was ready, Kate once again felt the sun beating down on her back. She knew without turning, that the sky was shifting, and that the lull in her busy day was over.
She shifted, preparing to turn and carry on her way, when suddenly a figure came out of nowhere and hurtled past her. Kate stumbled and flung out an arm, holding on tightly to the wall beside her. Crumbling red shards of brick dug into the palm of her hand as she steadied herself and looking up, caught a glimpse of someone throwing himself around a corner. She knew that face - it had been pinned to the murder board for the past few weeks. This was her lucky break.
"Stop! Police!" she yelled, and pushing off of the wall, she took off after the man. Dodging bystanders, she pounded along the pavement, her coat tails flashing behind her. The suspect mistakenly took a look back over his shoulder, and running at full speed he hit the lamp post head on. Kate drew to a halt, and winced as the man all but bounced off the tall metal pole, and crumpled to the dusty ground.
She hauled him up, and though the catch hadn't been as exhilarating as most, a satisfied smirk worked its way across her face.
As the pair stood on the side of the road waiting for backup, Kate looked across her city. The sun, still high in the sky, beat down unmercifully on the cities residents. A hiss of steam from a manhole gave cause for only an uninterested glance, as Kate grinned. This was her city, and once again, it was safe.
