"This won't hurt a bit," Nathan crooned to the frightened Indian child.
As her elders looked on with doubt in their eyes for most believed outsiders always lied, Little Dove met Nathan's eyes and stubbornly held still. She didn't understand what he said, but his touch was gentle and his eyes reassuring. She gazed into his eyes as he carefully extracted the thorn.
"There," he spoke a minute later. Every one breathed a sigh of relief as he held the thorn up for all to see before moving in to extract the poison. Little Dove smiled. It really hadn't hurt!
