I am absolutely in love with the Salvatore brother's relationship. I think I love them more than Stelena, which is probably why I wanted Damon to be the one who saved Stefan from killing himself.

"I am so terrified that one day I'm not gonna want to fight that anymore, Elena. And the next time I hurt somebody it could be you" even as Stefan spoke, he was fighting that urge.
"There will be no next time" Elena was confident that Stefan would win the fight. Sure, that he loved her more than anything and would never hurt her
Stefan was not, "You don't know that".
"Maybe I don't, but what I do know is that you could take this ring, throw it in the quarry, and meet the sunlight or you could put it on and keep fighting" Elena closed Stefan's hand around the ring.
Until that moment, Elena had this small hope that Stefan was just being broody like Damon had said. Then Stefan took the ring that was in his hand and threw it in the quarry.
"No!" she gasped.
"I'm serious, Elena. It's over. Go away. I don't want you to see me meet the sun" Stefan said softly. He crunched his way over the leaves and to the water. At the bank, Stefan sat down and began the wait for sunrise.
Elena could not wait. The sun would break through in just a few hours. "Stefan, please come home" she was crying, but the only answer she got was more silence. "Fine, come home or don't come home. It's your decision" her words were empty. She turned and ran past the old willow tree. Her car sat waiting for her and she sped off to the Salvatore mansion. This was out of her hands. The only one who could save Stefan, now, was his brother.

Damon sat by the fireplace, intent on drinking away all the small little bothers of the day. He smirked when he heard the sound of Elena's car careening up the driveway. His brother had always been broody and melodramatic, but never suicidal. Really, all of Elena's concern was unnecessary. That was what he thought, until he heard only one car door slam. It was just Elena by the scent and sounds outside. He shot over to the entry way and threw open the door. "Stefan?"
"Damon, you have to help. He threw his ring in the lake and he won't come home" Elena sunk onto the hood of her car, gripping her chest.
Vampires as a whole were very jealous of their lives, but Stefan had tossed his ring. The consequence was that he could not survive in sunlight. Did he mean to live by night, alone? The implication was that Stefan truly ment to meet the sun. He switched off all panic and useless emotions. At vampire speed, Damon ran to the quarry.
He leaned onto the willow tree and watched his brother skipping rocks on the lake. "Little boy lost" he finally spoke up.
"Let me guess, Elena sent you. Is this what it has come to? You begging me to live. I should have let you die that night. I should have died that night" tears threatened to spill from Stefan's eyes.
"You brood too much. Everything on this planet is not your fault. My actions and What I do are not your fault. I own them. They belong to me. You are not allowed to feel my guilt" his words were filled with hypocrisy. He had spent the last one hundred and fifty years making sure that Stefan felt guilty. Still, he meant them.
"That's nice to hear, Damon, but I forced you to change. I killed a few, myself. My actions have led to the death of so many. I have to end it" Stefan's words did nothing to convince him.
Instead, they enraged him. He plowed into his brother and grabbed him by the shirt. Angry words spilled from his mouth, "What gives you the right to leave her, to leave me? What about exploring it together? It's you and me for eternity. Would you leave me, alone"?
"You hate me" Stefan whispered.
"I hate you and I love you, brother" Damon acknowledged and admitted.
Something in Damon's words clicked for Stefan, "Eternity is too long for a man to live alone. I would not wish it on my worst enemy. Let alone, my own brother".
