Drabble AU based on the idea of Asami being a new airbender too - but, for whatever reason, not telling anyone else.
Monster
Bumi airbends, and Asami doesn't know what to do.
She found out that morning she could airbend. It terrified her, but excited her nonetheless. She and Bumi were connected to the Avatar and were present for Harmonic Convergence; maybe the spiritual energy gifted them with bending for all their troubles.
Then others started popping up, and Asami never told anyone.
She had watched Korra enough to know what to do when airbending. She'll wait to tell, for now. She doesn't want to disrupt anything, ruin anything, or be forced to stay behind on Air Temple Island.
Asami is glad she'll get to leave the city indefinitely. Even at the end of it all she might never return.
It's such a compelling thought that the night before they depart, she visits the police department. She has someone to see.
They open the door, keeping the bars separating her and Hiroshi steady and intact, but close the door to the outside world to give father and daughter some privacy, as per her request. She doesn't want to spoil this, not now.
"Asami?" She never visited before; he sounds confused, yet also relieved. There's a bit of disgust still lacing his voice, though. "How are you?"
"Fine." She doesn't bother to ask him how he is; it's pretty evident. "I'm keeping the company afloat, and now I'm going off with Korra to find new airbenders. They've begun popping up ever since a Harmonic Convergence."
"Hmm." Hiroshi doesn't know how to respond, so she is quiet for a minute so that he can say something back to her. "That's...interesting. ...And here I thought the world would be free of airbending after a few generations."
There it was. Asami snorted. "I don't know why you hate airbending. They're all pacifists; they couldn't hurt a fly."
"Bending is bending," Hiroshi hissed, beginning to get agitated. "You should've let Amon free the world of it."
"He was a bender too. Kind of defeats the purpose, I'd say." Hiroshi falters, and Asami seizes the moment. She only has a few minutes left to 'visit' anyway.
"And just so you know, dad, about those new airbenders I mentioned..." With a practiced flick of her wrist, she's airbending, a tiny twister dancing in her palm. "I'm one of them."
She watches as his eyes widen in shock, as he shrinks back in terror, and then leans forward, eyes narrowed, full of burning hatred and disgust. She knows what words are about to come, and she waits for them in anticipation.
"Asami Sato, you are no daughter of mine."
"I know." And she doesn't care. She's become the thing he hates most, a monster in his eyes, and she is no longer his little girl. He'll sit in here for the rest of his days, facing his regrets and failures, though, while she'll be living her life and succeeding where he could not.
"Goodbye, father. I hope I never have to see you again." She knocks on the door and is let out. As the door slides shut, she casts one last look at him.
He's in the cell corner, hands on his head, eyes shut, but there are tears beginning to roll down his cheeks. Asami falters for a moment, then steels herself. He deserves this, for what he did.
He'll live with feelings of horror and regret for the rest of his life.
She'll live with the same feelings for even longer.
