The first time Spencer Reid saw Jason Gideon was five years after Gideon left the BAU with nothing more than a note. Spencer and the team were in Pittsburgh for a case. Why Gideon was there is unknown (no one cares). Spencer is trying to cross a busy intersection during rush hour (impossible).
That's when he looks up and sees a man staring intently at him from across the street. No recognition crosses the young geniuses face as the two lock eyes. Deep inside Spencer's brain and memory, a name pops up: Gideon. The name refers to a man who left with only a letter to explain why, just like his father years ago (how ironic). He recalls cases, chess matches, lectures-
Spencer looks away first, because he doesn't care to remember. Besides, the others are waiting (and are more important).
