Ames frowned. "Looks like a bird house to me."
"I know it does", Winston snapped. "It's the only thing I can make out of wood. Who do you think I am? A damn carpenter or something?"
"Well, I'm sure it'll hide the bomb just perfectly", Ilsa stepped in, calming the waves.
"Did I say something wrong?", Ames quietly asked Chance a couple of minutes later.
"His dad used to make bird houses. He died early, it's pretty much the only thing he remembers about him."
"Well, there are worse things to be remembered for", she replied, looking older than usual.
"Definitely."
Chance knew Guerrero had overheard the conversation and was waiting for a sarcastic comment, but it never came.
… … …
She prided herself to assess customers with great accuracy. He looked like someone who wanted to buy mice for his snake or insects for his tarantula.
"Can I help you, sir?"
"I'd like to buy some fish."
Okay, not quite.
"We've just received a new shipment of piranhas. Or would you like to take a look at our red tail sharks?"
The idea was tempting – a whole new world of possibilities, especially since the knee cap thing was getting a bit old, but he wasn't here on business. Guerrero shook his head. "Colorful ones. Harmless."
Damn, this one was really making her question her abilities.
… … …
"Does that mean you're going to show up more often from now on?"
"No."
"You're setting up a fish tank big enough for a small whale in my living-room without asking for permission first and plan to leave all the maintenance stuff to me? What in the world makes you think I'm gonna go with it?"
"Whale are no fish." He carefully lifted his son from the ground. "See the orange-blue ones over there, buddy? These are rainbow fish. And here comes Mr. Angelfish…"
As her child squealed with delight in his father's arms it slowly dawned on her what he was trying to do.
"Well", she said, "Taking care of fish, how hard can that be?"
In the reflection of the dark tank's front panel she could see him smile.
AN: Okay, only yesterday I would have sworn that I would never ever write a fic with Guerrero's kid in it. Then this one jumped at me. Never say never...
