He dreamed in shades of gray.
Oceans of black ink, skies made of bone-white paper, notes in illegible scrawl dancing across his vision. Black and white and gray.
That was the world. His world.
Wars were just events to be recorded, the deaths of thousands on fields washed red with blood simply numbers to be tallied and remembered. People and faces that smiled and laughed were only names to be paired with deeds.
Detached. Aloof.
Such was the life of a Bookman.
By day, he committed as much as he could to memory. By night he drowned in vast seas of inky darkness and walked alone in fields of gray and white.
Such was his life.
At least, until he met them.
A sweet girl with an aura of kindness who made excellent coffee tinged with love. A young man with anger issues who denied the simple fact that he cared. A boy with white hair and a polite, open smile. An older man who could go from timid and polite to murderously furious in a heartbeat. A young woman who doubted herself with every breath and yet could perform miracles with time.
On occasion, an eccentric Chinese man and his worn, frazzled, assistant were thrown into the motley mix.
And suddenly, his world had colour. Glorious red, royal blue, magnificent green, cheerful yellow. Colours from every possible spectrum filled his dreams just as they filled his life.
His smiles became real. His expressions became more genuine. His life became something more than just recording events as they happen.
He started to care.
It was all thanks to them; they who turned his mere existence into life.
They led a colour-blind man and taught him to see colour.
They chased away the shades of gray.
