Disclaimer: I do not own the Twilight Saga and am not Stephenie Meyer.

A/N—I hope you enjoy this challenge entry. I love Edward, but I love writing his angst so much more… This is a series of three drabbles, put into one because I like long oneshots and didn't want to split this into three chapters.

Words: 300

Challenge: The New Year's Challenge from The Challenge Forum. Any genre, centered on New Year's resolutions, 100 words to 5 chapter limit, and due between January 5 and March 1.

Before

The clock struck midnight.

In the main room of the house, three stories below my feet, Carlisle and Esme clinked their empty champagne glasses together. My brothers and sisters spun around once more, their dance coming to an end. All three couples shared a kiss.

Sighing, I flicked the volume on my music higher. The alternative rock beat drowned out my family. It was just one more year to add on to my hundred and four years of existence.

My resolution was the same every year. Don't take a human life. Protect my family's secret. Simple.

It would never change.

"After"

There was nothing.

My existence before was black and full of a sense of doom. Those were happy times. My existence had some meaning—keep going for my family. Don't let them see how much I hated 'life'. Don't downplay their happy romances with my stark realism.

Where was my will to live? Gone with her. Gone with the true joy I had found. It was still there, wasn't it? Couldn't I—

No, I promised. I resolved to leave her be.

I renewed that vow with every second I spent in agony.

After all, I had nothing else to be.

After

The clock struck midnight.

The main room of the house was filled with people, with light. We had missed the turn of the year last time, too caught up in probable death. This time, we had visitors—Tanya, Kate, Garrett, Benjamin and Tia. Jacob, with my daughter hanging on every word that exchanged between him and his packmates.

My angel of light, of salvation, draped her arm around my waist. I looked into her eyes as her shield lowered.

Every thought was of love. I beamed down at her.

Repeating our wedding vows was our resolution for the New Year.

A/N—As you can tell, the first was is pre-Twilight, the second one is during New Moon, and the third one is post-Breaking Dawn. I didn't want to mess with that timeline, so I just decided to make that final New Year one year after Breaking Dawn. Thanks for reading!
