The last thing Tomoe expected was for him to take her into his arms.

"It's all right now."

And suddenly it was impossible to hold back her tears.

She couldn't remember ever letting Akira see her cry, and that made the tears flow even faster.

Kenshin only held her, silently, patiently. She opened her mouth to apologise, but when all she could manage were incoherent sobs, she gave up and buried her face in his chest.

It was Akira that she was crying for – she tried to remind herself that.

But when he pulled her closer, that reason started to slip away – her thoughts were overwhelmed by his scent, the strength of the arms around her, and the unshakable feeling that somehow, here, she was safe.
