Disclaimer: Rookie Blue belongs to ABC, not me.
Rated K, because I really don't think it warrants a higher rating.
A/N: Honor Role is still giving me ideas, lol.
Just another quickie.
I tried writing this yesterday, but it just wouldn't cooperate; and I had to re-watch the end of the show a couple time to get it right ... But finally, it's finished.
I hope you enjoy!

Gail Peck. Set after 'Honor Role'.
It's hurts a lot more than it should … to walk away from him.

She prides herself on being a lot of things. Determined, strong, capable … emotional is not one of them. Not only is it something she does not pride herself on being; it's something she often is not.
She learned a lot of things, from a young age, by watching her family. One of the most important things she ever learned was from her mother's example. In climbing the ladder to success, you have to be a little ruthless. Stepping on a couple toes along the way is necessary; as long as you don't step on the toes of the higher ups. Them, you have to work hard to please. In order to succeed and progress as a woman on a male-dominated workforce you have to prove that you have what it takes; you have to prove that you won't let your emotions get in the way.
So she's made an effort her entire life to ensure that they don't.
Only now, with Chris, she's finding that a lot more difficult that she ever has before.
It should be simple to stand up and walk away. She has a family loyalty to respect, after all. (Though, when push comes to shove, she isn't so sure the lengths her family would go to for her if they thought she was standing in the way of their own achievements.)
It anything but simple, though …
Her entire being longs to stay, to stick by him. As he calls after her, she can feel her throat restricting. And when she's out of the bar, desperately trying to suck in the fresh night air and fill her lungs, his words from their conversation ring in her ears. What was I supposed to do?
She doesn't know. They have a duty to everyone carrying the badge they do … but they're sworn to serve and protect …
But Steve's her brother.
And now, following him to his car, she knows that she should feel like she's chosen correctly, doing right by her brother …
But her heart's telling her otherwise.
And that scares her; because she does not, under any circumstances, let her emotions affect her judgment; she just doesn't. If she's going to be more than a uniform one day, she can't possibly afford to.
And that means that she can't go back now; she can't turn her back on her brother and walk away; she can't go back into that bar.
She can't choose Chris …
No matter how much she wants to.
