We don't need anyone
Author Note: Set after/during a certain scene in episode 3 of season 4 (Dead of Night). **SPOILER ALERT** Don't read this unless you've watched it because it won't make sense and may give some things away.
Disclaimer: Not mine, BBC's blah blah blah.
The lonely star looked down on Jack Harkness. Looked down on the man who was a captain, was a leader, was immortal, was eternal, but who was now just calling into nothingness for a friend. "We don't need anyone. Right Gwen? Gwen?"
But Gwen wasn't there. Hadn't been there since he'd carelessly set her aside. Pushed and pulled her until she had to move on, had to hold on to something real.
"Gwen?" but the line was dead.
When Jack first met Gwen he drank water, because you've got to be ready. But the only thing to be ready for now was death. Jack finished his scotch to clear his head. Of everyone in the world, Jack was the only one dying. Jack was dying as he had tried to live - alone.
And so he had called for help, called the only one left. Gwen thought that didn't make her special, it just made her alive. "We don't need anyone do we?" he had asked. Because not needing anyone was much easier done with someone else. Gwen thought it was her because the one it should have been wasn't there, the name unspoken, dead friends. The one who could have pulled Jack back together, made things right.
The lonely star looked down, careless Jack Harkness, thought the star, careless with your friends, careless with your lovers.
The lonely star knew, as lonely stars do, that Jack didn't need to die alone. But Captain Jack Harkness was dying as he lived. Silence at the other end of the line, because he'd said it too late. "I need you Gwen Cooper, I've always needed you my friend."
Gwen wasn't there. It was just Jack. And some bloke named Brad.
Please review because I'm a bit nervous about this one.
