There was blood everywhere. His hands, his shirt, the floor, probably his pants, too. But the filthiness didn't bother him, no. The way that it made the situation real? That bothered him.
Derek was dying.
And there was nothing Stiles could do to stop it.
"Stiles," Derek choked out. His eyes fluttered in pain, and Stiles gently adjusted his head in his lap.
"I'm here. Save your strength," Stiles whispered, biting back treacherous tears. Since when did he cry?
"There's...no point," Derek replied, grinning weakly. He knew, and he knew that Stiles knew, too. Stiles cringed as Derek coughed, pressing his hand harder to the gaping hole in his chest. Damn it, why wouldn't it heal?
"Derek, I-"
"Sing to me, Stiles," Derek mumbled, fighting to keep his eyes open.
Now, several things went through Stiles' mind then. One, Stiles didn't sing. Two, Derek never asked Stiles for anything. Three, Stiles would never deny Derek anything because he...
Stiles shook his head, took a deep breath, and began to softly sing as he gathered Derek up to his chest.
"Somewhere over the rainbow..." he began. He didn't know why that song came to mind, but it was his first thought. Derek hummed, watching him through half lidded eyes. Stiles took his hands off of the wound and held him tightly, resting their foreheads together.
"Way up high, there's a land that I heard of once in a lullaby," he continued, letting the tears begin to sneak free. Derek reached a shaking hand out and wiped them away before cupping his face.
"S-somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue, and the dreams that you d-dare to dream really do come true," he stuttered out, sniffling miserably. He began to rock Derek- gently, so he couldn't hurt him more than he already had- and Derek let out a sigh. If Stiles didn't know any better, he'd say Derek almost looked at peace.
"Someday, I'll wish upon a star and...and wake up where the clouds are far b-behind me. Where..." he trailed off, his vision clouding.
"Troubles," Derek supplied, his eyes sliding shut and his breathing slowing. Stiles swallowed hard.
"W-where troubles melt like lemon drops away above the chimney tops. That's where you'll...where you'll find me." Stiles was all but broken at this point, listening hard for Derek's heartbeat. One beat. Two. Breathe in. Breathe out.
"Some-somewhere over the rainbow, blue birds fly. Birds f-fly over the rainbow..." Silence. Derek wasn't breathing. No pulse. Nothing.
Stiles sobbed openly, clutching Derek to his chest and burying his face in his neck.
"Why, then, oh why can't I?"
