Five years.

It had been five years, yet standing in front of her grave, Clark Kent couldn't help the pain from resurging. He was totally broken; mind, spirit and soul and had never really started to mend.

After all, Lois had been his everything. He had loved her with all his heart and would have given everything to protect her.

However, even the strongest man on Earth hadn't been able to protect her from her demise. It had all been like a cruel cosmic joke. Fate had always wanted them to be together, but fate had had devious and different plans for Lois.

Indeed, after three years of wedded bliss, she had come to him with the news that a little Clark Junior could be under way. Filled with joy, he had immediately x-rayed her only to discover something else growing inside of her. The tests at Metropolis Central had revealed a malignant lymphoma, in its final development stage.

That had been the beginning of the end.

He had spent the next three months morally supporting her, though in his mind, he hadn't been able to get over the feeling that somehow, he had failed her.

His last words to her had been "I'm sorry."

Hers, "I love you."

Existing. That was all he did afterwards. He was still Superman. He was still Clark Kent. But he was no longer whole. He had lost the most important part of himself.

His friends, Bruce and Diana, had been quite supportive. Chloe, now a Queen, visited him monthly from Star City, to make sure that he was coping. She had been as affected as him but Oliver had helped her heal.

In contrast, he suddenly thought bitterly, he had lost the only other person who could probably have helped to take his pain away in time. Tess had remained an ally, despite her Luthor heritage. He had pushed her away though, losing her too, after realising that she had deeper feelings for him than just friendship. She had been broken hearted but Dr. Hamilton had mended her heart.

"You are wrong."

He came out of his thoughts at the sound of that voice. It couldn't be. He lifted his eyes and looked straight ahead, past Lois's grave, and there she was, looking exactly like she did ten years ago.

"Granny Goodness," he said, more as a warning than a greeting. After defeating Darkseid, he had never bothered to go after his minions. Maybe he should have.

"I am not here to fight you, Clark," she said, her voice filled with emotion.

Emotion which he identified as longing. He didn't understand.

"Then why are you here?" he asked, unconvinced.

She started to approach him, but instead of reacting, he was suddenly rooted on the spot.

The words she had spoken, so many years ago, had suddenly come back into his mind.

"I am here to ease your pain."

He looked at her, taking in her appearance; her shiny white hair that now stopped at her shoulders, her beautiful smile and her eyes, which held the promise of a better life.

She stopped a few feet from him, and opened her arms wide.

"It is time, Clark. See me and let me ease your pain," she said with a knowing smile.

Clark Kent didn't stop to ask himself if he was being mind-controlled or if he was under the effect of Kryptonite.

He supersped to her, because he didn't want to lose any more time. He accepted and cherished her embrace, allowing himself to find comfort in her. His Granny.

He pulled away after what seemed to be hours spent against her, in her arms, feeling better than he had in five years.

"I see you now, Granny. This is just the beginning of our forever," he said, smiling down at her.
