Contrary to popular belief, Pogue Parry did in fact have a brain of his own. Unfortunately, some believed he didn't, because he so frequently and easily agreed with everything that came of out Caleb Danver's mouth. But Caleb wasn't an idiot, and Pogue didn't agree with everything he said.
Just...most things.
They'd been in sync since, well...forever it seemed. Ever since they were fifteen, getting drunk in Reid's attic with a bottle Jack Daniels stolen from Caleb's mom, after Caleb had finished drunkenly berating Reid for Using again. Reid had retorted (albeit slurring) "Jesus, I didn't know the Power was gonna make you my fuckin' father Cay!" Pogue, always quick to step in for his best friend had told Reid off and told him that Caleb was right. But Reid never went down without a fight; even when he knew the other guy was gonna win. The next thing out of his mouth was: "Fuck man, if he's my father then you're my mother...You fuckers should just kiss and get it over with man" then he'd flopped onto his back, while Tyler giggled like the drunk fifteen year old he was, and donned a very girly (and quite becoming) blush.
A combination of the alcohol-induced haze, the buzz of the Power in his ears, and the latent boy-crush he had on Caleb caused Pogue to simply lean over and kiss Caleb.
And Caleb kissed back.
It was then that they knew that nothing would be the same. Caleb spent the rest of the week reading the Book of Damnation. He ate only when Pogue forced him to. At the end of the week, Caleb emerged with a triumphant grin, pointing at a certain passage. Tyler, Reid, and Pogue crowded round the book, eyes wide and eager.
There in the words of their ancestors it was explained that they would find a "partner" within the other sons of Ipswich, a spiritual companion that would never leave them, that would stand by them, practice magic with them, help them find a wife and carry on the Ipswich line. When the boys finished reading, Caleb simply grinned at Pogue and led him to the nearest bedroom, which turned out to be an old unused guest room painted mint green.
They would only notice hours later, exhausted and happier than they'd ever been. So Caleb had smiled in approval when Pogue had found Kate, as Pogue later would when Caleb found Sarah, many years after that night. And both of them laughed the night after they fully became partners when Tyler emerged from Reid's room wearing only Reid's boxers and 24 hickeys. They'd counted, while choking on their laughter, while Reid stoically kept track and Tyler got progressively redder.
So yes, Pogue was his own man, his own person. However, his spirit was so entwined with Caleb's that their arguments were few and far between.
But all parents have to fight sometimes, don't they?
