Anakin's POV
The war is finally over! I haven't felt this lighthearted in years. And the Council has revised many of the restrictions of the Code. With the revelation of Palpatine's true identity, a Sith Lord becoming Chancellor, it's been realized that if it weren't for the stagnation of the Order it could have been prevented. Padme and I no longer have to keep it a secret! She doesn't know that yet. I'm going to tell her in person. She should be walking home from the Senate now. If I take a shortcut, I should be able to reach her before she gets there.
I can see her now.
The shortest distance between two points is a straight line.
Time to run.
Look both ways before you cross the street.
No land speeders. Sprint. Now she sees me. Double time.
Look both ways before you cross the street.
Two more lanes. Left. Right. Left. No one coming. Almost there...
Padme's POV
The war is finally over! I haven't felt this light-hearted in years. And, a new Chancellor has been elected, Bail Organa! As soon as I get home I'm calling Ani. No, even better, I'll invite him and Obi-Wan and Ahsoka to dinner. It's too nice a day to take a speeder. I'll walk.
Everyone is celebrating. They have good reason to. I see a face, a familiar one. My friend, lover and husband. Anakin. What are the chances? Forget about the dress, time to run.
Look both ways before you cross the street.
Traffic is clear. One block between us. Double time.
Look both ways before you cross the street.
Left. Right. Left. Only two lanes between us. Only two lanes to perpetual bliss. The sign says walk, but he doesn't reach me. I see the crooked grin on his face, the mischief in his eyes, but he doesn't see the speeder. His body crumples under the force of the impact, and he rolls under the speeder and onto the pavement. He was only two lanes away. I pray for him to stay alive. To live to see the birth of our child, of the child he doesn't yet know exists.
"Anakin! Wake-up! Please! Anakin!"
The tears fall, and sobbing ensues. Come back to me, Anakin! Please, come back!
Ahsoka's POV
I love walking through Coruscant, people watching. And on celebration days, like today, it's ever so much more interesting. The sights, the sounds, the smells. The sounds. My montra pick up something, not very far away, only a few blocks. There is a crash and screaming. One word stands out: Anakin.
My feet fly faster than they have ever gone, in the direction of the noise. The wails of a woman can be heard over all the celebration. It's not my Master, it couldn't be. He couldn't be the only Anakin in the galaxy, could he? It must be someone else, I must have misheard. And yet, I run faster, dodging the crowd.
My heart stops.
I see them. The Senator from Naboo kneeling beside the still figure, dressed in dark Jedi robes. A cry escapes from my lips, after all, it could be no one but my old Master. I pull out my comlink and dial a frequency I'm no longer supposed to be in possession of. But who else would I call?
"Kenobi speaking."
I start sobbing when I hear his voice. It's been nearly a year since I left the Temple. I miss them so much.
"It's Anakin, he's been hit by a land speeder."
