Disclaimer: I own nothing. If I did, Bobby Singer would have a feminine name in the course of self-insertion.
AN: Fourth of my vocab oneshots. It wasn't until this vocab assignment that my teacher realized that I was using Supernatural characters. I can now mention angels, demons, werewolves, and monsters without him thinking that I'm insane :)
The Heretic
Sam and Dean were in South Dakota… getting chewed out by their surrogate father for not being careful enough on a case that they had been working on.
"Honestly, every time that you two find trouble, you end up smack in the middle of it," Bobby said in a gruff voice. He tossed them each an ice pack that they then held to their faces. "You two princesses need to learn how to take better care of yourselves on the job."
Sam winced when he moved his swollen lips speak, "Look Bobby, it's not as if we go looking for danger."
"Bull," came the brusque response from the older man.
"Ya know Sammy," Dean commented, "He's kind of right. We find or hear about a case, and we run straight to it to try and fix the problem."
"And get your asses whooped in the process. I would like to see one case where neither of you got hurt by the time it was over," Bobby grumbled.
The three men whipped around when a British voice remarked, "They just naturally attract trouble. Their reputation precedes them, and therefore everyone wants to try to pull one over them." The short man in a dark suit smiled at the shocked faces and added, "Hello boys."
"Crowley," Dean growled. He contemplated chucking his ice pack at the man, but he realized that it was childish and that Crowley would probably laugh at him.
"When in God's name did you get here?" demanded Bobby.
"Right after the boys arrived. I suppose you just didn't notice," Crowley replied with a smirk and a bombastic tone.
"Not that we don't love your company," Sam said sarcastically, "But why are you here?"
"Don't be mawkish," the guest reprimanded, disregarding Sam's sarcasm. "I needed to check on something here…"
Dean jumped back into the conversation, "We had a little encounter with some of your people on our last case. Care to explain?"
"Stop being pretentious," ordered Crowley. "Just because I have the authority to have my people to go after you two, doesn't mean I do. What they do on their own time is their own business. Besides, I have bigger problems to deal with than you two," the short man finished ambiguously.
"And he calls you pretentious," muttered Bobby.
Sam, Dean and Bobby all watched Crowley as he strolled over to one of the many piles of books that Bobby had in his house. The short man plucked a book from a pile, flipped it open, and skimmed the pages. After double checking the information one last time he put it down and turned to leave.
Crowley paused when Bobby's sarcastic comment rang out, "Is that all?"
"Of course. Just needed a little information. I wouldn't want to impose. Take care boys, and do try to not get yourself killed. It would be so disappointing if someone else got to claim credit instead of me." The well dressed man gave them a smirk, and with that, he left.
"I definitely don't trust him, but he has been useful in the past," Sam sighed. "Crowley has helped us catch others that have been causing way more damage than he has."
Dean interjected, "But he's also manipulated us to get want he wants."
Bobby summarized the situation, "We put up with the vicious dog because it keeps the rattle snakes away, but sleep with one eye open because he could bite us too."
Don't turn out the lights
'Cause there's demons in the night
And they prey on the fears in us all
