She didn't know how much more she could take. Nothing had transpired how either had imagined, the truth of their life together so far from any of the dreams and wishes they had nurtured. The initial excitement and novelty had given way to a hollow tension that echoed in their disappointed hearts, and was heard clearly in every silence.
He came to her, that day, as if sensing the finality of her thoughts, and pressed into her hands an airline ticket. She knew it was one way.
Happy birthday, Clarice. He said sadly, a little too quietly, and was gone.
