Chapter 1: The Girl with Amazing Blue Eyes

It was a sunny clear spring morning that was anything but pleasant for two young children. But that is to be expected when you return from your mother and grandfather's funeral and are now on the way to live in an orphanage.

The oldest child hadn't let go of her little brother's hand since they got in the car to go the orphanage. The poor little boy hadn't stopped crying since social services came to take them away from the only home he and his sister had ever known.

"Don't worry Souta, I won't let anything happen to you," the young girl promised her brother as she smiled, hoping to calm him down and cheer him up a little. 'I don't know if he'll ever be the same again…I know I'm not,' she thought to herself.

Souta halted crying long enough for him to speak to his sister, "But… I wanna…go home," he whimpered. He was about to wipe his nose on his sleeve, but his sister stopped him and offered him her handkerchief.

Well, not her handkerchief …Their mother's handkerchief. 'What was our mother's handkerchief,' she thought to herself, trying not to let the reality of the situation make her fall apart in front of her brother.

Their mother and paternal grandfather were in an accident a few days ago. Both of them died from a car crash involving a drunk driver. Leaving the two Higurashi children alone, with no living relatives to take care of them.

The family shrine that the children lived in was raided with social workers as soon as the accident was registered and the funeral was held a day later. A social worker explained slowly and clearly so that the Higurashi children would understand that they would be kept in a local orphanage and that the shrine will remain in the custody of the district until the oldest child, Kagome, turns seventeen.

"We just have to be patient Souta," Kagome said taking the handkerchief back from her brother when he was done and put it in her pocket. "In just six years, we'll be able to go back home again," she said as she wrapped her arm around Souta in a comforting one arm hug of reassurance.

Souta looked up at his sister with teary hopeful eyes. "Promise?" he asked as he lifted his pinky up to her.

She smiled at him and wrapped her own pinky around his, "Pinky promise," she lowered her forehead to meet her brothers. Souta smiled lightly. 'His first smile in days,' Kagome thought gleefully to herself.

"We're here," the driver suddenly told the two children. He was quiet for the whole ride the orphanage and hadn't offered one word of comfort or reassurance.

'Insensitive jerk,' Kagome thought in anger before looking outside the car window. The orphanage didn't look too bad. In fact, it looked nice with all of the kids running around playing outside.

The social worker let the two kids out of the car and grabbed the very few belongings the Higurashi siblings were allowed to bring.

Souta grabbed his sister's arm with both hands squeezing it out of fear of what will happen to them in an unfamiliar place.

Kagome held her head up high, because she needed to be strong for her little brother. That's why she hasn't cried since they got the news of the accident. She was the oldest and she had to take care of Souta, no matter what.

The social worker and two Higurashi children walked through the open gate, passing through the sea of children.

Souta looked up to look at the children playing and noticed a young boy, around his age, holding a soccer ball. He had the longest black hair Souta had ever seen on a boy, 'It's almost as long as Sissys," he thought to himself.

The boy with long hair waved toward Souta and gave a small smile. The young Higurashi gave a small wave back but kept one hand firmly gripped to his sister.

"This way," the social worker said, opening the door to the orphanage.

'Our home for now,' Kagome thought to herself a little sad.

Walking into the entrance, an older man stood there to greet them. "Welcome," the man said politely to the social worker, before he looked down to Kagome and Souta who were both still behind the social worker. "And who do we have here?"

The social worker stepped to the side to show a better view of the two children. "This is Kagome Higurashi, who is eleven, and Souta Higurashi who is seven."

Souta lowered his head shyly while Kagome looked the man in the eye when they were introduced. 'I may live here now but you're not going to take me down,' she thought while giving the old man a cold stare.

The head of the orphanage, Mr. Soma, seemed amused by her action. "Why don't you two go and play outside while Mr. Yagami and I get you all set up." His words may have sounded nice enough but for Kagome the message was clear. 'The adults need you to go away so they can talk about what to do with you.'

Kagome gently took her brothers hand that was still on her arm. "Come on Souta, let's go explore," she encouraged her brother, who nodded slowly in reply. Kagome walked her brother back the way they came.

Kagome and Souta didn't go and play with the children when they made it outside. Both of them were sitting down on the patio and watched them. Both Higurashi children were unsure how to mingle with these children, so they just sat quietly.

After sitting for half an hour, one of the big kids walked over to the Higurashi siblings with a smug look on his face. Kagome knew right away that this kid was trouble.

"Hey their cry baby," the big kid, named Toby, said to Souta trying to rile him up. Souta squirmed behind his sister, not liking Toby's tone. "Whatcha doing hiding behind a girl? Are you too scared to come out to the scary big world?" he said the last part using baby talk.

Kagome didn't' flinch away from the big kids advances. "Leave him alone," she warned him.

Toby snickered, unintimidated by her or her threat. The children in the yard all stopped what they were doing to watch what Toby would do. "Or what," he laughed, "You gonna tattle on me?"

Kagome did better than that.

She punched the boy right in the nose.

Toby fell backwards, as he held onto his injured nose. The children gasped when they saw blood was dripping between his fingers. Toby's friends didn't know what to do, since they never expected that kind of reaction from a girl.

The only person who only seemed a little impressed by what happened was a brunette haired boy that stood next to the little boy Souta waved to earlier.

Suddenly, the sound of a whistle blew and a woman whose hair was in a tight bun and wore a black slacks with a matching jacket came up to the children. "Alright, what's going on here?" the woman demanded from the group of children, wanting an explanation of why Toby was injured.

A random boy screamed to answer, "It was her, Ms. Jacobs!" he yelled pointing to Kagome. "She's crazy! She punched Toby for no reason!"

Ms. Jacobs looked at Kagome with a stern look on her face, "It's your first day here and you're already causing trouble," she said sounding disappointed and very annoyed.

Kagome tried to defend herself, "He was picking on my brother and I had to."

"No excuses," Ms. Jacobs interrupted, as she grabbed Kagome by the arm and began dragging her toward the doors. Another faculty member came and took Toby away to take care of his bloody nose.

"No wait," Kagome begged Ms. Jacobs as she tried to pull out the woman's grip. "Don't leave my brother with them. Please," she continued to plead as she looked over to her brother, "Souta!"

The young Higurashi was too scared to move, because he knew what Toby's friends were going to do him as soon as Ms. Jacobs disappeared.

Sure enough he was right.

Toby's friends were ready to beat up Souta for what had happened. Souta quickly backed away until he hit the wall of the building.

One of the boys made a fist and was ready to throw the first punch. And he would have if it wasn't for the soccer ball that suddenly hit him in the back of his head. "Oww," he yelped out in pain. The boy and the rest of the children turned around to see who had kicked the ball him.

It was that smart kid, Seto. Seto had used his brother's ball to protect Souta.

"Leave him alone," Seto warned the rest of the boys. He walked passed the group of boys and grabbed Souta's hand to drag him away from Toby's friends. No one dared messed with Seto or his brother Mokuba, so no one went after them.

Seto took the new kid to a safe place in the yard where he and Mokuba went whenever the bullies started picking on them. The safe place was behind a big oak tree that sat at the corner of the yard. There were bushes' all around the ironed fence that surrounded the orphanage that kept them out of site.

Souta didn't question his savior's actions of bringing him here, because he was still a little scared of the big kids. He only felt more at ease when they got behind the tree and he saw the boy with long black hair there too. "Th-Thank you," Souta said to the older boy.

"No problem kid," Seto replied, as if it was a regular occurrence.

"Ignore his lack of manners," the youngest kid said to Souta. "My name's Mokuba and this is my big brother Seto."

"I'm Souta. And that girl was my big sister Kagome," the young Higurashi introduced himself.

'I knew it,' Seto thought to himself. He had watched the scene with Toby with interest when he recognized Kagome's actions and expression when protect Souta.

It was the instinct of protecting a younger sibling; the same instinct he has for Mokuba.

Toby and his lackeys, as Seto liked to call them, often picked on Mokuba when they first came to the orphanage as well. It takes a lot of guts to stand up to them because of their size, and Seto was impressed when Kagome punched Toby in the face.

It was because of that that, Seto decided to save Souta.

An hour later, Kagome finally came back outside. "Souta!" she called out with worry when she didn't see him. "Souta, where are you?"

"Sis," Souta ran out from behind the oak tree to hug his sister, "I'm here. I'm okay."

Kagome hugged her brother close to her in relief. It took so much time to convince Ms. Jacobs and Mr. Soma that she only hit Toby to protect her brother. The entire she was inside, all she could think about was what horrible things Toby's friends were doing to Souta. 'I'm so glad he's alright,' she thought thankfully before she let Souta go and made sure he wasn't harmed in any way. It wasn't till after she was satisfied with her inspection that Kagome noticed the two boys that came out with Souta behind the tree.

"Seto saved me from those guys," Souta explained and pointed to Seto. "He and Mokuba stayed and played with me the whole time you were gone," he told his sister, excited that he made some new friends.

Kagome didn't take her eyes off Seto during Souta's explanation. She didn't understand why Seto helped Souta, but she was happy he did. "Thank you for saving him," she said gratefully.

Seto didn't respond to her gratitude. Instead he turned to his brother, "Mokuba, take Souta inside to our room and stay their till I come and get you," he ordered.

Mokuba never questioned when his brother told him to do something, so he took Souta's hand and led him inside without any argument.

Kagome was about to protest when Seto grabbed her hand and dragged her behind the big oak tree. 'What's he doing?' she thought a little offended. "Look I'm glad you helped my brother. But that doesn't mean you can boss me around," she told him as she pulled her hand back.

Seto was unfazed by her words and turned to look her in the eye. "Your brother told us everything," he admitted. "He told us what happened to your family."

Kagome's eyes widened with realization and lowered her gaze to the ground. Her mother and grandfather's death consuming her again. Tears slowly began to feel the tears in her eyes, 'No I'm not gonna cry…I can't,' Kagome said in her mind trying to calm herself down.

"It's okay," Seto said after a few moments of silence, watching her as she tried to hold her tears back.

Kagome raised her head to look at Seto, "What?" she asked, confused of what he meant.

"It's okay. He's not going to see you…You can cry now," Seto explained more clearly.

That's when Kagome realized why Seto sent their brothers away. It was to give her a chance to cry out the tears she had been holding for days.

"How did," she began to ask but Seto stopped her.

"Cause I've been where you are. And I know that you haven't cried once since it happened," he said knowingly.

Kagome never would have imaged anyone else being in the same situation as she was. Having to be strong for someone you love. But here Seto was, telling her that he understood what happened, and giving her permission to finally cry.

"It's okay," he said again.

Seto's words broke the barrier that was keeping Kagome's tears at bay. She cried her eyes out like she never had in her life. Slowly, Kagome lowered herself to the ground and pulling her knees to her chest, whimpering as the endless waterfall of tears continued.

Seto didn't say anything else to Kagome after that. He didn't hug her or offer any kind of comfort. He just sat down next to her and let her cry. Seto knew that this was what Kagome needed. One good cry, to let all of her emotions out, so she can help her brother through his own grief.

They don't know how long they sat there till Kagome finally stopped crying. But when she did, she raised her head up to look at Seto and smiled at him in thanks.

That was when Seto noticed Kagome's eyes.

Her amazing blue eyes.
