The Discovery
Over the course of their journey, Ed and Al have seen some strange, strange things. They thought they had seen it all...Until...
They came across the magical world of FFnet.
They read about Ed having sex with Roy, Al, Hughes, Scar, Envy and Winry.
They read about Al getting his body back for no apparent reason.
They read about random girls with tragic, angsty pasts falling in love with both of them.
They read about brotherly love and songs they had never heard of. They witnessed spelling errors, disturbing pairings, confusing crossovers, unrelated high schools...
Eventually, Ed's eyes started to bleed and he died of blood loss. Again. Sometimes he dies because of Scar, or a disease, or in battle, or of old age, or in Roy Mustang's arms, or while saving his brother, or in a train accident, or while eating poison ice cream, or being eaten by Gluttony, stabbed by Envy, or even by suffocation from all the fangirl glomping.
Al was very sad. This caused angst. Angst was written. Sometimes, angst is written about death, or disease, or war, or lost love, or lost limbs, or stubbed toes, or for no reason at all, besides the fact that fanfic authors like it when Ed sobs his orbs out to Roy.
Then a Mary Sue came along. Sometimes Mary Sues are Ed's long lost twin sister, or his best friend since birth, or Mustang's little sister, or Ed's equal when it comes to alchemy, or someone who will help them reach their goal, or a woman who will love Ed and make babies with him until the end of time, or a state alchemist since the tender age of five years, seven months and twenty two days.
The Mary Sue brought Ed back to life and got Al's body back, through a 'well thought out plot twist' from an 'author that knows what he/she/it's doing.'
