"It's Hollyleaf! We've got to stop her."
The two brothers raced through the wet forest, water slipping off the leaves onto their backs. As Lionblaze led Jayfeather over a fallen log, the birds started the dawn chorus. They skidded to halt, sliding slightly in the wet mud.
There was Hollyleaf, standing infront of one of the entrances to the tunnels, staring ahead blankly. "Heartbeat, a heartbeat, I need a heartbeat…" she murmured softly.
"Hollyleaf, don't do this." Lionblaze pleaded.
"I know I did the right thing," Hollyleaf shouted, focus returning to her eyes. "But no cat would ever understand!" the last note was almost a wail.
"Hollyleaf, we know that you did the right thing. Please. Come back with us." Jayfeather meowed.
"I…I can't," she whispered. "Everyone hates me. I ruined it all." With that, she turned around and plunged into the tunnel. Suddenly, a rumbling shook the ground.
"No…" stuttered Lionblaze. "She's gonna get killed…" The rumbling seemed to get louder, the birds stopped singing, and the sky's opened up and rain poured down on the two brothers as if StarClan was crying with them.
The area around the entrance to the tunnels finally gave way and a deafening roar echoed from the surrounding area, along with a high-pitched, femine scream.
"HOLLYLEAF!" Jayfeather screamed, running towards the mound of dirt. Choking back his sobs, he frantically clawed at the pile. "Please, I told you to come back with us!"
"Jayfeather, it's too late." Lionblaze stated, sadness etched in his mew.
"No, no it's not!" Jayfeather cried, increasing his flurry of digging. Finally, he paused; breathing heavily.
"We have to go back to camp, let everyone know." Lionblaze said softly.
"Wait," Jayfeather said, sniffing the air. Silently, he padded over to a rosebush. Ignoring the pain in his face, he, yanked a single rose off the bush, and loped back over to the dirt. Without a word, he laid the rose down on the mound.
"Here lies Hollyleaf, the best sister in the world." Lionblaze said.
Together the two brothers padded back to camp, their eyes blank, and their heads hung down with grief and their tails dragging in the mud.
