AN- This is one of my favorite stories. (Of course, all of my stories are favs, but… this is up there.) I'm very proud of it. I'm also extremely tired- it's10:21 PM, and I was up past 2:30 this morning playing Guitar Heros II at my friends house and reading her story. (As soon as she has it posted, I'll put the link either here or in my profile.) That's why I'm not as wall-bouncy as I usually am. –grins- Please R'N'R!!!

Disclaimer- Jonathan Larson owns Mark (not fair…), Roger (also not fair…), Maureen, Collins, Benny, April, Joanne, Angel, Mimi (eh, all those're okay… kidding!), and RENT in general. I don't. The only thing I own is this plot, the 2-disc widescreen special edition of the movie, both the OBC and movie soudtracks of RENT, a playbook from the stage production that my friend got for me when she saw RENT at theNederlander, and fifteen gazillion notebooks… pfft…

The Cold Truth of the Beginning

Mark's cold. He's been so very cold for such a long time, that he's forgotten what it's like to be warm- almost. There are dreams where he's being cradled in a pair of comforting arms and being held to a warm body, and a voice- such a soft voice, like nothing he knows now. Not since- well, since everything.

Since he left home, since he came to New York City, since he met Roger and Collins and Benny. Since he hooked up with Maureen, since Roger hooked up with April, since they started drugs, and since she committed suicide. Since Roger discovered he was HIV-positive, since he stopped shooting up and went into withdrawal, and since he got better. Since Maureen dumped Mark for Joanne, since Angel came into their lives for such a short period of time, since Roger met Mimi. Since all the times they've hooked up and broken up, and since Mark discovered his love for his roommate- and, practically, brother- was truly "of a different color" then he'd thought for so long.

So much had changed, and the warmth had disappeared. Now, there is only cold- such icy cold…

AN- Aw, poor Marky. –hugs- This actually first came to me one night when I was, go figure, cold. This is a III part story, completed. I'll post chapter II- titled Brief Heat and Cold Memories- as soon as I get 5-ish reviews. –offers hot fudge brownies- … -shrugs- Hey, it's something, right? –grins-
