Knighthood (Graduation)
By Magelet (lyrics property of Vitamin C)
Knighthood came too fast, but yet not fast enough. The study-group had their last meeting, when all had returned at Midwinter
for the Ordeals.
So we talked all night about the rest of our lives
Where we're gonna be when we turn 25
I keep thinking times will never change
Keep on thinking things will always be the same
But when we leave this year we won't be coming back
No more hanging out cause we're on a different track
They all looked at each other and sighed, knowing it would be their last grouping like this. Kel, for sure, was
leaving right away. She was on her way to stay with the Lioness for a while.
And if you got something that you need to say
You better say it right now
cause you don't have another day
cause we're moving on and we can't slow down
These memories are playing like a film without sound
After that last meeting, Kel ran to her room and cried. She wouldn't see her friends for what seemed like forever.
The memories flooded back- like that summer when Cleon kissed her.
I keep thinking of that night in June
I didn't know much of love but it came too soon
And there was me and you and we got real blue
We'd stay at home talking on the telephone
We'd get so excited and we'd get so scared
Laughing at ourselves thinking life's not fair
And this is how it feels. . .
Neal was the first to emerge from the Chamber, then Merric.
As we go on, we remember
All the times we had together
And as our lives change
Come whatever,
We will still be friends forever
Kel emerged last of all the squires to be sent into the Chamber in their turn. All came out shaky, but alright on the whole.
All were alive and all passed.
So if we get the big jobs and we make the big money
When we look back at now will our jokes still be funny?
Will we still remember everything we learned in school
Still be trying to break every single rule?
Will little brainy Nealan be the spymaster man?
Will Joren find a job that won't interfere with his tan?
I keep-keep thinking that it's not goodbye
Keep on thinking its our time to fly
And this is how it feels. . .
That evening was special for Kel and her friends. All were knighted at once. They rose with their shields and exited together.
Tears stung Kel's eyes as she glanced at her friends.
As we go on, we remember
All the times we had together
And as our lives change
Come whatever,
We will still be friends forever
There was a silent party that night. The new knights celebrated together in Neal's rooms. As she left, near dawn, with the
others, she pondered.
Will we think about tomorrow like we think about now?
Can we survive it out there?
Can we make it somehow?
I guess I thought that this would never end
And suddenly it's like we're women and men
Will the past be a shadow that will follow us around
Will these memories fade when I leave this town?
I keep-keep thinking that it's not goodbye
Keep on thinking that it's our time to fly
She tried to see it in a positive light, but it was hard. Very hard.
As we go on, we remember
All the times we had together
And as our lives change
Come whatever, we will still be friends forever.
As Kel rode off that afternoon, she knew that the bond between her and her friends could never be severed.
