A TIME TO SAY GOODBYE
Survival Drabble
I wish I could have stopped what was happening. It was out of my control, going too fast, rolling over and over down that cliff. Things were flying around inside the car and the noise was so deafening. Metal twisting and bending as we rolled down that wall of dirt and bushes. Finally, I stopped with a load thud. It's deathly quiet, the dirt is starting to settle all around me. Silence.
Is he dead? I hear him moan. Yes! He is alive, my master is alive, but his legs are pinned under me! I landed on my top, the very top my master dented when he landed on me so many years ago. I can't help him! I can't move off of him! I'm just a big hunk of metal keeping him pinned! He reaches for the radio, but it was broken in the fall. I can only hope that the curly headed one he calls partner can find him in time. I know he will find him because they have a strong bond, a closeness only they can understand. They can feel when the other is in trouble or hurt. He will be looking for my master - I just hope he can hang on. He is in so much pain. I don't understand what happened, why did he get pushed off the road? Why did anyone want to hurt him?
Hours have passed, an old man came and took my masters gun away. Was he going for help? Will he find the curly headed one and bring him back? My master is breathing so slowly now, maybe he is sleeping. Is he thinking about our time together? He has been the best master a car could ask for. He never gave up on me when I had trouble starting, or when my horn would go off when my door was open. Not even when his friends begged him to give me up and get a new car.
The hardest thing in the world is saying goodbye to an old friend. Night has fallen and we still lay here waiting, waiting to live, and waiting to die. He is growing weaker and I can't help him. Now, the sun has come up and the heat is so dry. My master needs water. He has stirred a few times, still trying to fix the broken radio. He hears dispatch but can't send a signal. Maybe he has and help will be here soon. I'm just a car a big hunk of junk as some call me but I have feelings and I can pray for help. Please send help God - save him!
And then… I hear it... someone running…getting closer. I hear him call out his partner's name! Oh that sweet sound "Hutch, Hutch I'm here." he says. I knew the curly haired one would find my master, he would never have given up. It took a while but they lifted me up and pulled him out from under me.
This is so bitter sweet. He was saved and now we have to say goodbye. Goodbye to a long and happy friendship between man and metal. As they carried my master away he looked back at me and, I knew by his eyes, that he was silently telling me…goodbye.
