Hunter-nin

They are alone, the outsiders.
Their job involves hunting down and killing their former comrades, the ninjas that become missing-nins.
They are feared by their fellow shinobi, feared and hated.
Hated for the lives of friends that they took, feared that one day the order will be given and they will be after them.
They work alone.
Other ninjas work in teams, but who would want to work with the likes of them?
No one.
But they know their purpose and winningly agree to it.
They keep their village secrets safe.
Safe from other villages.
They use stealth, poisons, traps, and the very elements to find and kill their target.
They don't fight fair.
How can they?
They go after the worst, the most brutal, and the most powerful ninjas on a daily basis.
If they fight fair they will die.
So they fight dirty.
Attacking while the target is injured, asleep, or otherwise preoccupied.
It's what they do.
Then they return the head to the village to collect the bounty on it.
It's how they survive, it's why they are feared and hated.
Walking down the street they are give a wide berth.
People don't want to be near them, they might be carrying the head of a former comrade.
They are even outsiders amongst the ANBU, the elite ninjas that strike fear into the hearts of the enemy.
Because they have been called on to kill former comrades and friends.
Because one day they might be called on to kill them.
But amongst each other they are not alone.
They all know what it's like to fell the scorn of the village, because everyone is someone's son or daughter, brother or sister, and friend and comrade, despite the crimes they have committed.
Amongst each other they can share their pain and loneliness.
Share a drink for comrades and friends who are gone.
Amongst their own kind, they are with friends.
But they still work alone.
Because that it's in their nature.
They are loners and outsiders.
They hunt the hunters.
They are ninjas who kill other ninjas.
And they're good at it too.
