Part One: The World of Remnant Arc
-Chapter One: Escape From Home
"This is Injustice, the world of Batman's determined Insurgency battling Superman's tyrannical Regime. This may not be world of Injustice as you understand it however. The Multiverse is a structure governed by a series of choices that branch into infinite paths. We find ourselves in one where the Flash never changed sides. Superman and a handful of his lieutenants escaped the final battle against Batman and another world's superheroes. Now the struggling Regime flees the ever persistent Insurgents and their other-worldy allies."
Regime soldiers carry large, wooden crates into the base and unpack the contents to be constructed. Flash zooms around constructing the final components for a makeshift cosmic treadmill. They are using stolen or salvaged parts gathered over the course of months. The invaluable parts, acquired in secret, are taken to Superman's new secret Regime base, a secret in danger of being discovered. Superman and Wonder Woman lift various bulky machines into specific areas, the Flash darts around it to seal it into place. Cyborg hastily types in front of a computer, analyzing various codes and statistics presented on the glowing monitor. The entire room is filled with a sense of urgency as everybody rushes to get the treadmill into operational status.
Cyborg calls to their leader "Superman, if you get that conductor installed we can start the process in a few minutes." Superman glides to the conductor and transfers it to an empty generator. The Flash then rushes towards the generator, only a swift red blur is seen as he installs the conductor in seconds. The Flash calls out to Cyborg "It's all ready Vic!"
Cyborg: "Alright, here we go!"
Cyborg pushes the activation button, starting up the complex machinery with a long hum signaling that all the pieces are warming up. Cyborg: "Treadmill online and ready for initial set-up!"
Superman and Wonder Woman smile and then look at each other. Wonder Woman's smile fades looking as if she's pondering something. "Do we really have to go? It's not too late to stand and fight another day."
Superman gazes towards the complicated mess of wires and metal "We have no choice Diana. The world won't support us anymore. Not with the way things are. Even if we did choose to fight…I no longer have regular access to the outside with how much surveillance is out there, nor access to the Solarium. My power is not sufficient enough."
Wonder Woman: "Then where will we go?"
Superman returns his focus to Wonder Woman "To another Earth. One like ours. If Bruce could find one, then we can to. We need a place where we can take root and build ourselves up again."
Wonder Woman looks down with a sigh, doubt filling her mind.
Superman places his hand on her shoulder: "Our time will come Diana."
A voice interrupts their moment: "Time might be something we don't have."
Hal Jordan, the Yellow Lantern, strides toward them accompanied by a band of Regime soldiers.
Hal: "Our scouts are reporting Batman's forces closing in on our location. They emerged from a boom tube just outside our location."
Superman: "They must've tracked us somehow."
"How could they?" questioned Hal, "This place is shielded, any tracking signals would be blocked here."
Superman looks to the Treadmill and generators. He contemplates for a moment before the realization strikes him "The generator! He must've known somehow that we'd build it. He was scanning for its energy signature!"
Wonder Woman: "How would he know we were trying to build it?"
Superman: "Specific stolen parts. He deduced what we'd use them for." He points to the soldiers: "ALL FORCES TO BATTLE STATIONS! PROTECT THIS CHAMBER AT ALL COSTS!"
Superman paces to Cyborg "How much time Victor?!"
Cyborg: "Just about…done! Go Barry!"
Flash nods and zips onto the Treadmill. He starts to run, progressively getting faster until his movements blur, lightning crackles in the air around him.
Cyborg: "Treadmill powering up. We'll be touching on multiverse access in a minute."
Superman: "We might not have a minute."
A thunderous crash is heard rumbling through the base, and the terrified voice of a man blares over the intercom: "BATMAN'S FORCES HAVE ENTERED THE BASE! I REPEAT: BATMAN'S FORCES HAVE ENTERED THE BASE!"
"Hal, Diana, with me! We'll buy you as much time as possible Victor."
Diana draws her sword and shield, and Hal powers up his ring and starts hovering. The three take up a triangular formation mere steps away from the main door, they're prepared for whatever may enter.
Several crashes are heard, each emitting a resounding tremor that sounds closer with each occurrence. Each wave of crashes makes the three tense up little by little.
BOOM
A blue streak blurs across the room, too fast for the Regime footsoldiers to tag with their machine gun bullets. The streak shoots straight for Superman, sending him crashing into the far end of the room. The other earth Superman wrestles with Regime Superman against the wall. Regime Superman's arms barely matching the power of other-world Superman's strength.
Following the other Superman are Green Lantern Hal and the other Wonder Woman. Regime Wonder Woman shielding against oncoming gunfire before Green Hal pulls up a glowing green shield to cover the two of them. He then sends the shield out as a wave that knocks over all the Regime soldiers, but not before Yellow Hal shielded himself and Regime WW from the wave. Combat fills the room as the six heroes of two worlds clash.
Cyborg's frantic typing comes to a stop and he looks to Superman. "Link established! Ready for the scan!"
Wonder Woman yells "There's no time!"
Superman struggles and punches other Superman away. "Lock onto the first signal!"
Vic inputs few more commands, and the monitor displays a map of worlds before locking onto one with a partially shattered moon. "It's time!"
A bolt of lightning branches out in front of a projector, eventually becoming more bolts as a spatial tear appears in the room.
Regime Superman bats the other Superman away before screaming "EVERYONE GO!"
Wonder Woman and Hal soar into the portal and vanish into the darkness.
Vic yells "Flash, Superman, let's go!" before arming his Sonic Cannon and firing at Batman's allies. The Flash breaks away from the treadmill and zips into the portal.
Clark tries to make towards the portal but is constantly stopped by his three foes. He exchanges blows with Other Superman before being punched so hard that he flies into the Treadmill's generator. The room starts to shake.
Cyborg turns around stating "The portal is destabilizing! Superman, it's now or nev-!" Vic is interrupted as a hidden Batman sneak attacks him, jumping onto him from behind.
Superman winces before flying into the portal, knowing he can't save Vic with the time left.
Cyborg struggles with Batman before spontaneously tossing him. Batman lands some ways in front of the portal. Vic was momentarily free before Other Wonder Woman knocks him out.
A pulse shoots out from the portal, a sign of it becoming more unstable. The portal begins to vacuum the surroundings. Batman claws at the ground before being forcefully pulled into the portal.
Other Superman yells "Bruce!"
A boom tube appears behind the other-world heroes. Other Cyborg emerges from the portal "This thing's gonna blow! We need to get out of here!" The three had no time to be hesitant, grabbed Regime Cyborg, and headed into the boom tube to escape. The portal pulses with more lightning bolts surging out tearing the room apart. Finally it explodes, the cosmic energies from it rippling into the space around it.
Superman courses through a bright blue tunnel filled with streaking light and energy. His path shooting him into an unknown darkness ahead. He braces himself as he travels faster and faster through the multiverse tube. The vibrant sparking sounds of energy whirl up becoming louder around him. Then suddenly…silence.
Superman opens his eyes, blinking at his new surroundings. He hovers above a forest darkened by the night. He looks to the sky seeing a bright, partly shattered, moon.
"Clark" shouted a voice from below.
Superman looks down to Diana, who is motioning towards him to come down. She stands alongside Hal and the Flash.
He floats down towards them, smiles and says "It's good to see you all in one piece."
"Likewise." Says Hal patting Superman's arm. Clark nods at Hal, then walks to Diana to firmly, but briefly hug her.
Barry looks around. "Where's Cyborg?"
Superman looks to Barry then down in a sad manner "The portal was destabilizing before I went in…he couldn't make it."
The group was visibly saddened after hearing the news. Pondering Vic's fate as a prisoner of Batman's forces.
Wonder Woman recovers from her temporary sadness and states "Now's not the time to worry about that. We need to find out where we are."
Superman nods "Agreed. We-"
Distant screams echo in Superman's ear. Following the screams were the distant growls of beasts.
Wonder Woman: "What's wrong?"
Superman's expression becomes urgent. "People in danger! They're under attack! All of you, with me!"
The four of them take off, the three fliers gliding above Barry who sped below. Superman: "Don't wait for us Barry! Go!"
Barry surges off into the distance ahead of them. Superman, Wonder Woman, and Hal begin to approach a walled off city. Along one of the walls crawls a horde of pitch black monsters flooding the area with their sheer numbers.
Superman: "I don't know what these things are, but we have to stop them."
Hal breaks off from the group shouting "I'm on the wall!" He creates a flat yellow light construct and uses it to scrape all the monsters off the surface. He creates several more hard-light construct weapons and uses them to batter the crowd of creatures.
Barry races below in the city streets attacking monsters and saving the pedestrians below. Superman glides closer towards the larger hordes in the streets and freezes the monsters over with his cold breath. When Clark reunites with Wonder Woman he looks up and shouts "Diana, look out!" The two veer away from each other, a large body crossing between them. A screech echoes across the sky. When the two come back together they look back at the object that had just flown past them. A gigantic dragon soars across the sky, roaring, and deploying black pods from its body. Wonder Woman draws her sword and attacks its face. The beast's skull collides hard with her sword and pushes her back through the air but without breaking her defensive brace against it. Superman flanks its side and fires a heat ray from his eyes into one of its wings.
The Dragon breaks off reeling away from the burning pain. Superman and Diana rush towards it and attack together.
Various monsters pour into the streets as huntsmen try to fight them off. The creatures of Grimm, humanity's greatest blight in the history of Remnant. Among the many Hunstmen defending the city stands Qrow Branwen, James Ironwood, and Glynda Goodwitch. The powerful trio beat back the endless Grimm assaulting their position. Qrow slashes at a Griffon, cleaving it in two, with his scythe. He lands on the ground and stands, but is caught off guard by an Alpha Beowolf. It tackles him, knocking his weapon free of his hands. He tries to push it away as its maw snaps at his face. Before he could register anything a red and yellow streak of lightning had flashed before him. Suddenly the Beowolf was gone.
Qrow looks up at the red streak, surrounded by lightning, dashing between Glynda and Ironwood repelling all of the Grimm attacking them. The Flash stops in front of Qrow and holds his hand out to help him. "Are you alright?" asked the Flash. Qrow shakes his head trying to come to his senses. "Uh- I guess I am." Qrow takes the Flash's hand then Flash pulls him up. Qrow groans from getting tackled earlier then says "I've seen fast semblances before, but never one that fast."
The Flash tilts his head confused. "What's a Semblance?" Before Qrow could answer the roar of more Grimm distracts Barry, "Sorry, gotta go!" then he zips away from the group. Qrow watches him go looking amazed, nods, and replies "Yeah." before picking up his scythe. Glynda walks towards Qrow and asks "Who was that man?" Ironwood walks in reloading his pistol "That's not important right now. What matters is that he's on our side. He's doing his part, so let's continue doing ours." Qrow and Glynda nod and they depart to fight off more Grimm.
Barry zooms through the streets of Vale as various lights, buildings, and people flash by him. In a split second he registers a small glimpse he caught on the corner of his eye, a woman being attacked by two flanking Beowolves leaping at her. He zips to the scene, jumping in between the Beowolves mid air, and spinning to deliver simultaneous lightning charged punches to both of them. They are pushed back dissolving as they fall. Barry shoots off before the woman could understand what had even happened.
Barry enters a city square, surrounded by a few dozen people all being attacked by Grimm. His face strains for a second before bolting at full speed. He whizzes past one civilian to punch the Ursa Grimm that was in pursuit, then runs up a wall punching a Griffon and catches the man falling from its claw. He runs down the wall dropping off the man safely. He strikes an oncoming Creep, and then turns around hurling a lightning bolt at another one that was about to attack a child. He then zooms to several Grimm, knocking them all into a street. They all pile up and Barry spins around them creating a tornado that launches them all for miles in a direction away from the city.
Barry stops, letting out a strong sigh from the battle before hearing a loud stomp. He turns around to see a large elephant-like monster, a Goliath, approaching the square. Barry recovers then puts himself into a starting position to run. He vanishes, leaving only lightning in his place. Barry runs towards the Goliath. In just the right moment it's trunk touch the ground, and Barry leapt onto it. He ran up the trunk, and as he crept up to its face he phased directly into its skull. The Goliath stopped for a moment, rumbling as a hundred loud crashes and impacts erupted from within its large body. Shooting out from its back came Barry who launched into the sky after phasing through its thick hide. He landed on the ground as the Goliath dozed for a second, moaning as it leaned over and crashed into the floor. Barry smirked. The people in the square appeared confused, but also stared in awe of what happened as they look towards Barry. He looks back at all of them smiling, but his and their glances were diverted when they heard a loud crash in the sky. Looking above them they see Superman and Wonder Woman beating back the Grimm Dragon.
The Dragon attempted to climb higher into the skies, but Superman and Wonder Woman were in close pursuit. It turned quickly and launched itself towards them. Superman peeling off, but Wonder Woman threw herself to its wing and plunged her blade into it. Tearing through the crimson membrane as the Dragon flew past her. The Dragon screeched in pain. It was badly damaged, but didn't lose its airborne capabilities just yet. It turned towards them once more. Wonder Woman came at it first slicing at its throat and causing it to veer upwards. When it got to Superman he inhaled deeply then unleashed a torrent of cold breath towards it. In a few moments the Dragon struggled as ice crystals crept along its body. In a matter of moments it was freezing over completely. Wonder Woman flew next to Superman, and then the two flew at the Dragon together. With one colossal strike they shattered the entire Dragon into hundreds of frozen pieces which all dissolved on the way down.
The dissolving pieces practically fell like snow around the couple. Down below the civilians in the streets and evac zones cheered at them. Clark and Diana smiled at the people then at each other. The moment didn't last long when Clark overheard a voice divorced from all the cheering.
"IMPOSSIBLE!" cried a woman's voice in the distance.
On Beacon tower Ozpin's office lay in ruins. Cinder stands at the edge of the room staring out the window appearing furious. A few feet away lay a defeated Pyrrha, still injured from the arrow in her ankle. "This isn't what was supposed to happen!" complained Cinder. Pyrrha begins to chuckle, angering Cinder before she turned to the redhead. Pyrrha looks at Cinder with a relieved smile "Y-you've lost. I don't know how, but…it's over." Cinder grits her teeth, and then out of the corner of her eye she spots a red blur landing in the room. There stood Ruby with her scythe ready to battle. Ruby looked determined, but that expression was traded with confusion as she saw who was before her. "Cinder…?" she said squinting.
Cinder suddenly hurls a fireball in Ruby's direction. Ruby attempts to jump away but was launched by the explosion, falling to the ground while her scythe flies out of her hand. A bit of light debris falls onto Ruby due to the explosion shaking some of the chamber's foundation. A shard of Pyrrha's sword zips past Cinder's face, barely slashing her cheek. Cinder looks back to Pyrrha with anger, Pyrrha's hand still up after using her semblance to launch the shard. Cinder summons her bow and fires an arrow directly into Pyrrha's chest, sending her to the ground. Cinder smiles "The next one will be for your head!"
Cinder readies another arrow pulling at the drawstring. Ruby shakes off some of the debris, and looks to Cinder trying see what was happening. Her blurry vision focuses and sees Cinder aiming her bow at Pyrrha. Realizing the situation Ruby reaches out and cries "No!"
A blue and red blur shoots towards Cinder, snatching her so fast that her bow flew out of her hands. In a split second Ruby saw Cinder about to fire at Pyrrha, blinked, then Cinder was gone. To the side Ruby looked upon a caped man suspended in mid air gripping Cinder by the throat. Ruby took this chance to run to Pyrrha who was now writhing on the ground thanks to her arrow wound. She panicked not knowing what to do. Superman held Cinder's neck tightly, her aura sparking and cracking in his grip. She desperately grabbed at his immovable arms, unable to shake free. "You won't be hurting anyone anymore." Superman promised in a low threatening one. Cinder attempted to shoot fire into Superman's face, but he was too quick to catch her arm and divert it. Superman held her up higher, and then crushed her neck with his tightening grip. Cinder's eyelids opened wide, then eased to a close as her life faded away. Superman loosened his grip causing her to slip down his hand and onto the floor.
"I need help!" desperately cried Ruby from the other side of the room. Superman's serious expression changed to concern. He turned to her and glided over to where Pyrrha lay on the ground. Ruby held Pyrrha's face in her hand, tears streaming down Ruby's cheeks. Pyrrha manages to utter few words "I-it's too late." Ruby shook her own head "No! Don't say things like that! We-" Ruby couldn't finish her sentence, and cried knowing nothing could be done.
Pyrrha looked to Ruby, barely raising her hand. Ruby saw this and met it with her own, gripping it tight. "I-it's okay Ruby." Pyrrha coughed and continued "Smile. That's the Ruby I want to see..." Ruby hesitated, but managed to turn her frown to a smile.
"Th-thank you Ruby…" Pyrrha said with her own smile. Pyrrha slowly panted for a few seconds before her last breath left her body.
Ruby closed Pyrrha's eyes before she fully broke down into sobbing. While he didn't know her, Superman was still saddened by the loss of one so young. He went to his knees next to Ruby. He asked "Come here little one." with his arms open. Ruby may not have known Superman, but she had no one else to retreat to. She turned to him and hugged him, still sobbing. Superman held her, guarding her with his arms. He let her cry for a few minutes. "She was brave even when meeting her end, and now you have to be brave too. To honor her memory. Can you do that?" Ruby broke away slowly and wiped the tears from her face. "I-I think so." she nodded.
"What's your name?" Superman asked. Ruby looked up at him and replied "Ruby."
Superman put his hand on her shoulder to reassure her. "Ruby, I promise you that with all of my power, for as long as I'm here, I'll do everything I can to stop tragedies like this from happening again."
Superman floats upwards and holds out his hand "You won't have to fight alone. Will you join me?"
Ruby looks up to Superman floating slightly above her. She looks to Pyrrha, then to Cinder's body, then back to Superman. She sniffles one last time, considering his request.
She looks to him with her sadness replaced with determination. She reaches for his hand, and takes it.
