The Valar never found him. Perhaps they perceived him to be dead and did not hunt for him, or perhaps he had outwitted them. The latter would be terribly tragic news for their intelligence, as he was not thinking much at all when he had made his flight to the darkest corner of Arda. He festered in his hatred like an infected wound, broken and miserably pathetic after his latest and most devastating defeat.
There would be no recovery, no redemption, nothing left for him. His master was chained in the void until the end of time, and he could never assume a form or possess any power of any sort ever again.
So he hid, and he hated, and his soul darkened more and more over the thousands upon thousands of years as he contemplated everything that had come to pass to land him in that position. His memories warped themselves as time wore on, leaving things out and adding things in until they were a muddled soup of nonsensical events with him at the center of the chaos. He despaired over his fate, broken and forgotten in the dark with no hope.
His mind pushed further and further past the breaking point, and he began to question why he was even in hiding in the first place. If he was so miserable, why keep himself locked up in eternal seclusion? Why not just... Leave? Of course, his good sense told him that would be dangerous business. Despite this, he obsessed over the thought for decades. Eventually, he decided that enough was enough, and mustered his courage to get out of his dark pit of loneliness he had inhabited for millennia.
Finally, he managed to drag himself from his hiding place. Even through the haze of false memories and blinding brightness, he was shocked at the change the world had undergone in his absence.
