Rem knows many things. For instance, the fact that it's unrequited love. That it extends both to her relationship with Misa and Misa's relationship with light. Rem knows that Ryuk wants her, but not as the friend that relationships like the one he wants usually double as.
Rem knows that she was a human woman once, and that she had committed suicide after her brother died and that this was why she became a shini gami after death. Rem knew that L loved Light and Light lusted after L and that Matsuda coveted them both. She knew when lights sister bleeds as a woman and when she bleeds because she too loves Misa and won't ever have her.
Rem can smell it when Soichiro cheats on his wife and she can taste that his wife knows and is to drunk to care after the son dies because Ryuk kills him.
Both as a shini gami and as dust she knows things. No one seems to know that she can tell then every thing about them, even things that the didn't know, except maybe Ryuk, who feels her presence as the shadow of a phantom.
Rem holds these secrets to her still heart, because they are her secrets, the only things that make her feel alive. She writes them in her death note and kills them so that she remembers that she isn't human, and that she hasn't been since she watched her baby brother's eyes close for the last time.
Rem watches from everywhere and nowhere and feels as at home as she ever has. Maybe Misa noticed her distress, maybe not, but Rem likes to think not.
Rem knows that matt had hoped to kill himself with his cigarettes, but didn't want to after Mello held him, but couldn't stop. Rem sees Nears invisible wall, just with in the physical barrier of his train tracks and that Watari dies a little inside as he watches his boys each go off, and each of them not return.
Rem some times wishes that she could tell some one what she knows. But that's a rare occurrence. And then Rem fades and she can tell that Ryuk regrets it. And she thinks that he may know. It's nice to think.
