AN: So…yeah…this is my first Tales of Graces story. And first Tales story in general. So this is just a short bit I thought off upon playing Lineage and Legacies and seeing the Family Portrait. So, here it is.
"A little more to the left. A little more. Okay, a bit more to the right. And there!" Sophie ordered around. The two men were finally able to hang the object they were holding after an hour of lugging it around the manor and being ordered by Sophie in where to put it.
"Finally, it's over! I could've sworn my fingers were almost dead from holding it for too long." Asbel said as he looked at his hand.
"Same here, brother." Hubert, who was visiting from Strahta with Pascal, said. Suddenly, the door behind them swung open. The three people looked behind them and saw Hubert's wife, Pascal, Cheria, Cheria and Asbel's 7-year-old son, Aston and their 4-year-old daughter, Colette, walking in.
"Sophie!" Aston yelled as he ran up the stairs and clung to Sophie's leg. Sophie smiled and picked him up. Colette shyly walked up to Sophie and tugged at her dress, begging for attention as well, which Sophie gave by carrying her too.
"Oh, so you guys finally hung it, huh?" Pascal asked as she walked up the stairs with Cheria. The thing that was recently hung that Pascal was referring too was the new Family Portrait Asbel had commissioned a month ago. In the portrait, Asbel was standing with Aston while Sophie and Cheria were sitting in two different armchairs with Colette sitting on Cheria's lap.
"Yep. Took as an hour to get it at the right angle but thanks to Sophie, we did it." Asbel said.
"It's beautiful. You did a wonderful job helping them, Sophie." Cheria praised her to which Sophie nodded.
"There you all are. Lunch is ready." Lady Kerri said as she approached them. "Oh, I see the new portrait has been hung. It's nice to see it with the old one."
"Yeah. Cheria and I couldn't bear to take it down. It's also so that future generations can see it." Asbel said as he wrapped an arm around his wife.
"Well, come to the dining room for lunch now. I'm sure Pascal and Hubert are hungry after their journey." Lady Kerri said. They all agreed and most of them left. But Sophie stayed in front of the portraits.
"Sophie? What's wrong?" Asbel asked her. He knew that even though she was given a last name and a loving family, Sophie still feared the day that she'll be left behind when they all die. They all knew that.
"Asbel, when you and Cheria and Hubert are gone, will I still have a family?" She asked him.
"Of course you will. You'll be a Lhant as long as you live and the world goes on. Remember, even when Cheria and I are gone, there's still Colette and Aston and their future families. You have to protect them as well, alright? And as long as their families live on, you'll have a family. Alright?" Asbel explained to her. Sophie nodded in response.
"Come on. Let's have some lunch. I'm sure there's some crablettes for you." He added. At the mention of crablettes, Sophie immediately went with him to the dining room. It comforted her to know that decades, maybe even centuries, from now, she would have a loving home and a family.
