Writer's Note: This is a little story I did when I got the prompt "Love and Loss". I don't remember how I came to pick Tidus and Auron, but I really liked how this turned out. Keep in mind I was and still am in a really bad writing slump.

I don't own Final Fantasy and I don't want to own Final Fantasy. This is just a work of fanfiction.

Tidus looked around a corner in the hallway in his house. Standing there in the living room was the red clad man who had come shortly after his father had vanished. The boy was still only seven. His mother lay in bed, not paying attention to him as usual. Sometimes she called out for his father. She refused to eat or do anything else for that matter. Once in a while she got up to go to the bathroom, but over the last week that had begun to come less and less now. Finally, the blonde stepped out into the living room where Auron stood looking out the window.

Without even turning, the ex Guardian sighed. "I don't know what I'm going to do if your mother dies..."

"Why do you care anyway?" Tidus demanded.

"...I don't know how to raise children." Auron stated with a sigh.

"Who said I wanted you around anyway?" Tidus said in a snotty voice. Hey, the kid was only seven; his mother was dying and his father... well...

A mirthless chuckle wrung itself out from the chest of the crimson clad samurai as he turned around. "Who said I cared what you wanted?" He had made a promise to Jecht. 'Protect my son', the former blitz ball star had asked of Auron when the end drew near. 'I promise...' was Auron's response, of course.

"My mom's gonna die, isn't she?" The little boy asked, dropping his defenses in front of the man who had just shown up in his life very recently.

Auron thought for a few moments and then looked at the boy with his one good eye. He didn't know what to say, so he just nodded.
