Levi was sitting in the dim light at the conference table, at the head where his place was. He stared out the window and watched the clouds pass over the moon. He was trying to keep to himself and keep quiet, but being Captain does not exempt you form worry. If it did, you didn't deserve the title. With responsibility came anxiety in shapes, including sleepless nights.
"Captain?"
He turned his head and saw Petra walking out of the shadows, a small china cup in her hands.
"I thought you'd be asleep." He said, almost like a scolding.
She shook her head and looked to the window.
"I've got a lot on my mind."
He waited for her to expand but she didn't. She knew if he wanted to know, usually he would ask. To her surprise he extended his hand to the seat on his right, motioning for her to sit with him. She smiled and came forward, taking her seat and letting her cup sit on the table.
" I guess I just think you made the right decision. About Eren."
"Then why are you up so late?"
"Why are you?"
His lips stayed in a hard line and she smiled again.
"It's not your decision I am questioning. I never would. It's his. I can't pin down his motive and so to me, he's a threat until we can absolutely trust him and he trusts us."
"Then we have something in common."
"We have more than that." she said and tilted her head. "Still though…" She said and folded her hand together around her cup. When silence fell between them it was with mutual understanding and had a relaxed feel to it. He watched her play with her cup and the way her hands move, so precise and swift it jogged memories in his mind.
"Do you remember the first titan you ever took out?"
She wasn't thrown off by the random question.
"Yes. I still don't know how I did it. I sort of just stopped thinking and let my body take over. I was so terrified, but I knew that if I thought, my terror would just spin it's web in my mind. So I just… went blank."
"I remember watching you. You had a kind of flair that seemed familiar."
She laughed and looked him dead in the eye.
"Maybe I studied a certain someone a little too much." She said, and he rolled his eyes.
"I don't look like that when I'm in titan mode."
"You do. You're completely dramatic about it. How would you know? You can't exactly watch yourself."
He narrowed his eyes even more at her remark and was about to make a witty and bold comeback but she waved her hand.
"I am sure this whole thing with Eren will be fine. in time, your decision will be proved a great one. So stop the doubt and worry. Just do what you think is best for the Scouts, like you always have."
She smiled and stood, walking towards the door the let to the dormitories. his eyes fell on her steaming cup.
"Don't forget your tea, Petra."
"You can have it Captain. I make it like yours anyway." She said with a small blush and walked out the door.
He started at the cup like he was concentrating on a game of chess. Eventually he reached across the table and gripped over the steam. he inspected the cup. She had taken a sip. He was conflicted but eventually shrugged, taking a sip himself and turning back to the moon.
