They see each other sometimes.
He still flies in to cover the State of the Union, big charity events, etc. He'll catch her alone in a hall, on a balcony. You look good, he'll say with a terse smile. She'll force a laugh, You always were a good liar. A momentary glimmer in his eyes, an honest moment will hang in the air, and they move back to the party.
Three years after the election there's a fundraiser at a big hotel in California and she wanders out to the patio overlooking the beach. He's standing with his back to her and his hands in his pockets. She stops beside him, crosses her arms. It's beautiful, she says with a sigh. He meets her eyes and there's a slip of a real smile. I still miss you, and then he's gone.
