It was a Thursday morning. It was recess, Henry was sitting against the school building alone. He was playing with his marbles. He didn't have friends, he was usually alone during recess. Unless the boy three grades higher then him. He would torment Henry almost every recess. Much like today. The boy big and fat stood before him. Henry didn't dare to look up. He was so scared of that boy. He would always push him, or steal his marbles.
Henry was caught off guard when the boy grabbed his wrists tightly and yanked him up. Henry wobbled a bit but managed to stabilize himself. He looked down at his feet still to terrified of the boy in front of him.
"I see you got new marbles from your mommies" the boy said in a whinny tone. ''So that means you're giving them to me'' the boy said pushing Henry slightly. "No these are my special marbles. My mommies said they were special you can't have these'' Henry said moving to pick up his marbles. He balled has hands into fists to keep his marbles safe.
The boy grabbed his wrists again, only now tighter than before. ''I said you were going to give them to me'' the boy pushed Henry hard enough to fall on the ground and let go of his marbles. The boy hurried to steal Henry's marbles. When Henry stood up again the boy was gone, and he heard his teacher calling everyone to get back inside.
It was the end of the school day. Henry was happy to go home and curl with his mommies. Before walking outside he checked his wrists. They still hurt. This was the first time his bully had left him with bruises. He made sure that he had his shirt cover up the bruises.
His face lit up when he saw both his mother's waiting on him. Usually only one of his moms would be there. He ran over to them and they both engulfed Henry in a bear hug. Henry only has been living with his mommies for two months now but he really loves them, and he knows they really love him too.
''So Hen what would you think if we'd go to Granny's for a milkshake'' Emma asked ruffling Henry's hair. Henry nodded excitedly. Regina smiled and guided him to his usual seat in Regina's car, which was behind the passenger seat behind Emma. Regina walked around the car via Emma's side sneaking a chaste kiss. Both Regina and Emma took their seats in the car. They took off only moments later.
They arrived at Granny's about ten minutes later, one of the perks of living in small town. They got out of the car. Regina laid her hand on Henry's shoulder, habit she had developed since they had adopted Henry. They all entered the diner, smiles evident on their faces.
They said down at the bar and placed their orders. Three milkshakes, two chocolate ones for Emma and Henry and a vanilla one for Regina. Ruby their waitress placed their milkshakes in front of them. Henry quickly reached out for his milkshake, his sleeves moving up slightly.
That's when Ruby saw the bruises on Henry' wrists. Ruby gasped and retreated quickly back to the kitchen.
"Granny, I need to talk to you'' Ruby said concern evident in her voice. Granny busy stirring the meal she was making. Groaned in annoyance. ''Hurry up if you would child, I'm quite busy right now'' continuing her stirring. Ruby moved closer.
''Well Henry he had bruises on both of his wrists'' Ruby said taking over the stirring so Granny could cut up some vegetables. ''Ruby get over it kids play, they fall, they get bruises it's as simple as that'' Ruby put her the spoon down. ''Granny listen it weren't just bruises, t were handprints. I think Emma and Regina might be abusing Henry'' Granny dropped the knife she had been using on the floor. ''Ruby I think we need to call social services''.
On the other side of the diner the Swan-Mills family had just finished their milkshakes and were ready to leave. Regina helped put on both Henry and Emma's jacket. Henry threw his arms up indicating he wanted Emma to pick him up. Emma picked him up and twirled him around. Making Henry giggle.
When they got home, They took off their coats and shoes. Regina and Henry made their way to the living room to play with the dinosaurs, while Emma went to the kitchen to pour them a drink. She pulled three cups from the cupboard and poured in apple juice in two of the cups and orange juice into the remaining one.
She took the glasses to the living room. The sight she was met with was one of the most adorable things. Henry and Regina were sitting on the ground toy Dino's scattered over the floor. There were two dino's in Henry's hands and one in Regina's.
''MOMMY MOMMY, LOOK AT THE DINO FAMILY'' Emma chuckled. She put the cups down on the coffee table and joined her family playing with the dino's. Their family was truly perfect. Emma leaned in to give Regina a kiss. Regina eagerly returned the kiss. ''I want a kissy too'' Henry said in a whiny tone but still smile brightly. Both Emma and Regina leaned in to kiss Henry's cheeks.
It was not long after dinner that their family time had ended by a sudden knock on the door. Regina got up. While making her way towards the front door she placed a quick kiss on Henry's temple. ''I love you'' Regina managed to say before making her way out of the kitchen. Just when she opened the door she heard Henry shout ''I love you too''.
''Good evening, how can I help you?'' Regina asked the stranger at the front door, a smile still evident on her face. ''Good day Mrs. Swan-Mills. I'm Lexie Parker I work for social services'' the smile on Regina's face started fading away. ''Come in, Henry and Emma are in the kitchen'' Regina stepped aside to let the social worker in.
They entered the kitchen. Henry was seated at the kitchen table while Emma did the dishes. ''uhm.. Emma a social worker is here'' Emma dropped the plate she had been cleaning in the sink. Resulting in water splashing everywhere. "uh, oh mommy''. Emma turned around the face the social worker.
Emma had been there before. The look on the social workers face was a face she knew all too well.
Emma took a dish towel from the rack and started cleaning up the water you spilled. ''Miss Parker what can we do for you?'' concern laced in her voice. "Well I came here to talk about Henry. Maybe it might be better if Henry isn't present during this conversation'' Lexie said. A look of sympathy manifested in her eyes.
''Henry baby why don't you go play with your dinosaurs'' Regina said bowing down so she was face to face with Henry and stroking his cheeks. Placing a kiss on his head Henry ran off.
Emma, Regina and the social worker all took place at the dining room table. Tension so thick you could cut it with a knife hang in the air. The social worker sighed and started talking. ''We have received some complains about you regarding Henry'' Emma gasped, Regina just looked paralyzed.
''What do you mean. We have been nothing but good to him'' Emma spoke her voice barely above a whisper. Regina still not saying anything reached out for Emma's hand and held it tightly. ''The inhabitants of Storybrooke seem to disagree'' the social worker started explaining the situation.
Everything around Emma seemed to disappear. She knew exactly what this meant. They were taking Henry away from them.
''I'm sorry Emma and Regina but I'm afraid I have to take your son with me''
Silence. The Swan-Mills residence was normally filled with laughter. Everything was going to change now. Regina stood up from her stair and made her way out of the kitchen towards the living room. Silent tears streaming down her face. She sat down next to a playing Henry on the floor. She looked down at him, that's when the sobs came. They were loud and ugly and took Henry out of his trance.
He looked up seeing his momma crying. He scooched over wrapping his tiny arms around Regina's neck. The gesture only made Regina sob louder. "Don't cry momma. What's wrong'' Regina couldn't speak yet. She couldn't tell her precious boy that he was going to be taken away from his mother's. ''It's nothing baby boy'' Regina held their son even tighter, tears still streaming down her face. She could hear Emma yelling that they couldn't take away their son.
''Momma why is mommy yelling. Yelling is not nice'' Regina chuckled. ''It isn't honey. This isn't nice'' Regina told him. Emma and the social worker were now standing in front of them. She took Henry out of Regina's arms and asked him to show her his room. Henry pulled on the social workers arm, together they made their way to Henry's room.
''Emma this can't be happening. They can't just take away OUR son'' Regina fell into Emma's arms. The tears now falling from Emma's eyes fell on Regina's hair. ''I know baby but we have to stay strong now. We have to be strong for Henry. We will get him back I promise you. We're going to do everything to get our baby boy back okay'' Emma said trying to comfort Regina but also herself.
It felt like an eternity had passed before Henry came down the stairs. The social worker following with a packed suitcase in her hand. This was it they had to say goodbye. Henry looked confused, he had no idea what was going on.
Henry put his suit next to the door and ran towards his mothers'. They both engulfed him in tight hug. Henry could still feel the tears of both his mothers' falling on his head. Emma and Regina both pulled away a little so that they could look at their baby boy. "Mommy momma, what's going on?'' Henry asked. He was way too young to understand, they couldn't tell him the truth. They couldn't tell him the social worker was taking him away from his family.
''Baby you're going to go with the social worker for a few days okay. You're going to be back home in a few days I promise you'' Henry started crying now too. "I don't wanna leave, I wanna stay home with you and the dino family'' Henry sobbed. Emma and Regina pulled him closer to them.
''Please you can't take him from us. He can't leave his home. He needs to sleep in his own bed, with all his stuffed bears. He won't sleep without them all. He needs his bedtime story, without them he gets horrible nightmares. He needs someone to cuddle with when it's storming because he is really scared of storms. He needs someone to check if he has brushed his teeth, because he will say he has done it when he didn't. He just needs to stay home where he belongs with us, his parents who love him so very much. He is everything to us you can't take him away. Please let him stay with us please'' Emma cried looking at the social worker while still holding her son and wife tight.
''I'm sorry Miss Swan-Mills but I'm afraid I can't let him stay'' the social worker said sympathetically. "Henry are you coming with me'' Henry looked up to his mothers'. Regina spoke up. ''Henry baby we are going to miss you so so much. No matter what they say, no matter what anyone tells you we do love you. You'll come back home soon'' Henry nodded and wrapped Regina into a tight hug. Henry turned towards Emma. Emma couldn't say anything but 'I love you so very much' before letting out a loud sob. Henry pulled Emma into a hug. Rubbing circles on Emma's back Henry tried to comfort her.
''It's gonna be okay mommy. I be home soon. I miss you lots okay. Don't forget to tell momma her bedtime story yeah'' Emma chuckled. ''I won't baby, and you don't forget to brush your teeth momma and I will know if you didn't'' Emma let out a teary laugh. She kissed his head and let him go. Henry looked at both his mothers' again, tears running down his face.
''Come on honey let's not keep Ms. Parker waiting'' Regina said. They walked towards the social worker. Both kissing Henry on his head once more. The social walked him to the car. Henry waved at them before he got in the car. While the social worker started driving away. Henry turned around waving at them one last time. Emma and Regina waved back trying their hardest not to break down.
When the car turned around the corner all hell broke loose. Both woman collapsed on the porch unable to move or do anything except cry. They wrapped their arms around each other trying to comfort the other, but they both knew it would be a lost cause. Their son, their baby boy had just been taken away from them.
