Refrigerator Light

There we are again,

in the middle of the night,

we're dancing round the kitchen

in the refrigerator light. - Taylor Swift

The clock in the front hall of Anubis house chimed midnight, but Jerome Clarke didn't hear it. He sat in the kitchen, on the counter, sipping his mug of coffee that would surely keep him up when he attempted to fall back asleep later. But he didn't care about sleep, oh no. All Jerome cared about was Joy, and them. He couldn't figure out why Joy wanted to leave him. Why Mara wanted revenge so badly that she would let her friend get hurt. Why he had to screw things up so bad and lose the only girl he ever truly loved? Joy.

"God, Joy, I'm so sorry." Jerome whispered to no one in particular.

"So sorry for what?" Joy asked as she shuffled into the room. Her hair was disheveled and messy, and she had bags under her eyes, like she'd been crying. And clearly not sleeping.

"Everything. I should've listened to you when you wanted to explain." the tall blonde boy said bravely.

"Well, can I explain now?" the small girl asked timidly. Jerome waved his hand to the chair across from him, and Joy sat down.

"Mara wanted revenge on you, because you hurt her," she started, as Jerome nodded, "and she wanted me to make you fall in love with me, and then I would break your heart so you knew how it felt."

Jerome looked as if he was about to cry.

"Go on." he urged, his voice watery. Joy continued, shakily.

"I thought it would be easy, that I wouldn't fall for you, because, you know, we hated each other." she almost laughed at the last part.

"But you fell for me." Jerome confirmed.

"But I fell for you. And I was going to tell Mara I couldn't break up with you, but she really wanted me to. So I told her I would, and I realize it was a mistake, and Jerome, I'm so, so sorry." Joy finished.

"Joy, Mara got her revenge. That's done, you did break my heart. I just want you to mend it, and maybe Mara will let us be happy." the boy told his girl.

"Maybe she will." Joy smiled.

"Well, I hope so, because I love you." Jerome choked out. At first, Joy was shocked, but soon her shocked face turned into a smile.

"I love you too." she realized.

"Then would you care to dance, my lady?"

"I would love to."

Jerome helped the small girl out of her chair, and wrapped his arms around her waist. She placed her arms around his neck and they started to dance. No music, no candles, just the refrigerator light.

"This is really nice." Joy smiled, tipping her head in to press against Jerome's forehead. His arms gripped her small waist gently, pulling her even closer to him.

"It is." Jerome agreed, placing a light kiss atop the girl's head. He took her hand and spun her around, watching her laugh with a great smile plastered to his face, before pulling her right back to his chest with ease.

"I guess we did get our happy ending." Joy decided, staring into Jerome's icy blue, but mesmerizing, eyes.

"I guess we did." he proclaimed.

As the pair danced, Mara Jaffray stood outside of the door, taking it all in - the words of love, the laughter, the silence where they were just enjoying the other's presence. And as much as she hated the fact that Joy was dating her ex-boyfriend, she decided she'd let her friend be happy.

"Everyone deserves a happy ending." Mara whispered to herself, allowing the cliche words to fall off of her tongue.

Everyone deserves a happy ending.

Down the stairs, I was there,

I remember it

all too well.

Cliche, but cute. Just a little Jeroy idea I had, since I absolutely ADORE them. They're adorable! Thanks for reading, review please! - Sydney
