Kagerou Days

A/N: Hello people~ I wrote this because I felt it would be interesting, and I just thought that this deserves a spot on this site, so...yeah. It's based on the Vocaloid song 'Kagerou Days' or 'Heat-Haze Days'. I suggest you listen to it, it's a very nice song. If you cant tell, it's written from China's POV, and uses human names sometimes. By the way, the haze can be whoever you want it to be. I wasn't bothered thinking of a suitable character. :P

EDIT: [13/11/12] I just came back to fix up this fic a little. It wasn't written as well as I usually do, so I had to change it slightly. It's a little different than before, but I guarantee it's better.

Disclaimer: I do not own Hetalia or Vocaloid.

It was August 15, 12:30 in the afternoon- a normal summer day, and the weather was incredibly nice. I was talking with Japan in the park, because I had nothing better to be doing. He had a cute, black cat in his lap, and was stroking its head slowly, which pleased it. I couldn't help but feel worried though- black cats were a sign of bad luck.

"Well, y'know, I kind of hate summer." he bodly murmured. I agreed with him, even though I didn't mind at all. It was kind of peaceful for once, and I prefer summer over winter. I didn't blame him though- a lot of people dislike the heat, since it does get annoying sometimes.

It was silent for a few minutes. After some time, all of a sudden, the cat he wa stroking escaped from his grasp, and ran across the road. We were both surprised by it's actions. Japan immediately stood up, and began to pursue it.

"Hey, don't run off, neko-san!" he called as he ran towards the cat, almost without thinking. I shot up in fright. He was running across a road. Without looking. Before I could warn him though, I noticed the crossing light glow a frightending red. Suddenly, a truck came out of nowhere and slammed into his fragile body. His bone-chilling scream pierced the air, and crimson red blood sprayed everywhere. My body froze in place, as I stood and watched in awe. I couldn't believe it. It was happening way too fast.

'No..this..isn't real, right?' I thought, as I looked around me. People walking by stared in fear. There was one particular person who caught my eye though- a mysterious man, watching with a smile on his face. He looked down at me.

"This is all real!" he confirmed in a mad laughter.

"No..your lying! I-It can't be...just who are you, anyway, aru?!" I yelled. I began to feel dizzy and tired. I barely heard his reply as I slowly collapsed onto the ground, and my eyes began to close.

"..the haze." With that, the blue of the summer darkened away.

I shot up out of my bed, sweating from fear. I examined the room around me. I was in my bedroom, and my clock was slowly lticking. I slowly sat up, as annoying crickets started chirping.

'Thank god it was just a dream. What kind of dream does that to you anyway, aru..?' I thought. I was so relieved. The dream had me a little scared, but it's all good now. I still had one question on my mind, though.

'What..time is it now, aru?' I twisted my body around and grabbed my phone that was sitting on the table next to my bed. It read Auguest 14, sometime past 12 in the morning. I had slept in again..not that I had anything planned. It was at that moment when I realised something.

'Kiku is probably waiting for me again, today. I better hurry up then, aru!' I pulled myself out of bed, and leaned against the closest wall. I still felt dizzy from waking up. Once I could properly stand, I walked into the kitchen, ate some food, got dressed properly and headed outside.

Waiting for me outside was Kiku, like I expected. He was crouching down on the soft grass, playing around with a black cat. Huh. He's never brought any animals with him before, but it's not too unusual, because I know he has a soft spot for small animals. I walked over to him, smiling.

"Good morning, aru. How long have you been standing out here, aru?" I greet. His attention reverted to me as he gave me a warm smile that made me blush.

"Ah, good morning, Chuugoku-san [China] I haven't been out here all that long." he responded.

"Why don't we go to the park, aru? It passes time, aru." Japan nodded his head, and we began walking to the nearby park.

We soon reached a park. It was a really nice, relaxing place, and we would always go there when one of us had troubles, or just needed air. I breathed in the refreshing air, and sighed. Kiku and I decided to sit by the edge of the road. It was then that it hit me. Exactly this happened in my nightmare last night. I internally panicked.

'What if it had the same outcome, aru? That won't happen, right..? I need to be careful now, aru...' I warned myself. After all, the last thing I wanted was for one of the only people I truly cared about to get hit by a car because of a silly cat.

After a few minutes of random chatting, my worries finally got to me. I had to give in and tell Kiku about my nightmare last night. It sounded strange, but I had to get it off my chest.

"..but y'know, it's a little strange. Yesterday, in a dream I saw us walking in the exact same park as this, aru. It has gone exactly the same as our morning has too, aru. Its like it predicted what today would be, aru..." I explained. He just gave me a look of confusion, which turned into a small laugh.

"Really? That is odd." he commented. Right after he said that, the cat he was holding jumped up, out of his arms, and ran across the road. Panic shot through my veins. Like in the dream, he stood up, and called for the cat. The second he stepped off the pathway and was about to chase the cat, I shot up, and grabbed his wrist. I wasn't going to take any risks.

"W-Why don't we go home now, aru?" I nervously suggested. Kiku looked back at me in confusion, but nodded his head anyway. I sighed in relief, and let go of his arm. We left the cat, and began to walk down the pathway and back to my house.

We were nearly at our destination, when I noticed something a little strange. Everyone surrounding us turned their heads up to the sky and opened their mouths in terror.

'What's going on? What are they staring at, aru..?' I thought. Curious, I looked up to see the most unexpected thing. My eyes widened. From the sky, dropped down a long, iron pole that pierced right through Kiku's body. It was terrifying. The sound of his ripping screams were heard through buildings and trees. It took me a moment to comprehend what had just happened.

"K...K-Kiku..!?"

'No, no, no, no, no! W-Why is this happening to me!' I panicked, as I looked around me. The laughing haze was present.

"This is the real thing!" he laughed. The world started spinning. I fell to the ground again, and my eyes began to shut again.

'No matter what I do...can't I save you..?' I thought. I glanced over at Japan once more, and couldn't believe it. I thought I saw him smiling. Tell me this isn't real..

I suddenly awoke in my bed again, sweating bullets from fear. I sat up, and wiped them off my forehead.

'Nearly got me again, aru.' I sighed. Those dreams were getting intense. It's like they knew what I feared, and were striking those places. Just to be sure, I snatched my phone off the table, and looked at the screen. It read August 15, 12:30 in the afternoon. It looked familiar. I thought for a moment, before realising why.

'Didn't I do something like this in my dream? Wasn't it this exact day, aru?' I shook the thought out of my head, and proceeded with the rest of my day. I got up, ate, went outside, walked with Japan to the park, and sat down by the park again. Just like in the dream I had in my dream. This dream business was getting confusing, really. We talked about the exact same things, I didn't bring up my weird dream though. Maybe this once, the truck won't come out of nowhere? I had to test it. The day ended the same though- the cat ran across the road, he chased, and the truck did come. It slammed right into him, the haze laughed, and I blacked out. Exactly the same as before.

I awoke in my bed. I sighed. This was getting way too repetative for my liking. I did my usual thing again. Japan was waiting outside. We went to the park, we talked, the cat got up, and he stood up. This time though, like the second dream, I grabbed his arm and stopped him from pursuing the cat. We both began to walk home again. I could only guess what was going to happen next. Just like I thought, people around stared, and the iron pole dropped from the sky and pierced him again. I was starting to get tired of it, and believe the haze. The fact that this wasn't a dream, and none of it was.

I passed out yet again, only to awake in my bed. It was then, when I realised something crucial. Something I should of realised earlier. This was an endless loop. It would repeat forever. There was nothing I could do about it. I didn't want to think that way, but it seemed like the only conclusion.

'I... I.. I don't want to see Kiku die anymore, aru! This is.. too painful.. too much, aru..Beyond these repeating summer days, another ending must exist, aru!'

Countless times I had blacked out in the heat. I realised a long time ago that it went in for decades. One particular morning though, on August 15, 12:3 in the afternoon, I had just had enough, and I had come up with a plan. I did my usual, and walked with Japan to the park again. From there though, things were going to change.

Once the cat ran across the road, I knew it was time. Kiku began to chase it, but I wasn't going to let him. I couldn't stand to see him die again. All of a sudden, I pushed him aside, lightly bu effectively pushed him behind me and jumped onto the street. At that moment, the truck slammed into me. Kiku's fear and tear-filled eyes met with mine as my body became twisted, and blood sprayed all around. He was as shocked as I was the first time this repeating day occured, but I was sure I had done the right thing. I had finally found the alternative end to this loop. It was for him. If the haze laughed 'Serves you right!' again, then this would be what you'd call a normal summer day. But he didn't. All of that ended that day.

On August 14th, at some time past 12, Japan awoke upon his bed, and he said,

"I failed this time, too..." as he cradled a single cat.
