I'm So Sorry
She wondered what cruel fate this was, what god was choosing to turn her in to his personal toy of amusement. Caroline growled, spinning around and managing to bring her arm up just as it lunged at her, its immense jaw snapping ferociously as they both hit the ground hard. Flesh and muscle tore from her arm and she screamed in agony, the pain blurring the sides of her vision as dark drops of warm blood splattered across her face. She moaned head spinning as the white of her bone glistened against its blood soaked snout. Caroline gritted her teeth, fighting the urge to slip in to the darkness surrounding them, creeping into her vision and seducing her with the promise of blessed relief. She wouldn't give in to it, she couldn't.
Caroline couldn't see the rest of the pack but she could hear them, could smell them, their rancid breath heating the air around her and causing her to choke on the strong smell of decay and the metallic odor of her own blood. They were circling her, watching, waiting for a signal from the one snapping madly above her. She whimpered, face contorted in pain and fear that she was slowly but surely losing consciousness. She struggled to lift her good arm, and with what little strength remained managed to swing, fist connecting with the side of its head. It toppled off of her, spittle and blood flying from between bared teeth as it shook its head in disorientation.
She had three seconds in which to struggle to her knees before the others were on her. One of them striking a blow to her back and sending her sprawling face first against the cold dark metal of the ground. Her head bounced off of it with a resounding crack before she was fully surrounded. Their claws sunk in to her flesh, pulling and ripping as their howls of victory and lust echoed in the vast darkness. Caroline whimpered under their assault, the blinding pain receding to numbness as nerves were shredded. Tears slipped from her eyes to trail and mix with her life's blood on the ground as the voice that was once a soft whisper steadily rose in volume.
"Nicklaus."
"Nicklaus."
"Nicklaus."
She sobbed even as her vision went dark. She was too late, she had failed, and she would never be able to warn him. She would die here and then they would go for him. Her failure would mean his certain death. She wondered if this meant she would see him soon on the other side. A final tear slipped out as her eyes closed.
I'm so sorry.
