June 2nd, a baby girl was born to a 19 year old mother. Her family was ready to accept their first granddaughter and niece. Their family was made up of 7 people, all from different background except for 2. The child's mother was mentally ill and thought she was ready for the task of caring for a child.
That year things got bad with the young mothers parents. She took her daughter away from them and left to live with someone she thought she could trust. The man was not good himself, a drug dealer, he welcomed the young girl in with empty promises of shelter and an everlasting love.
A few weeks passed before the girls' parents found where she was. She had been living in a terrible place doing drugs and who knows what else what. The baby girl, Toa, had been found asleep in a drawer meant for clothes. Her mother had tried to hide her again. In the end her parents won, bringing them both back home.
They both grew up together, the little girl learning to love her 13 year old uncle. She took a liking to her whole family, especially her mother. The girl grew, learning more and more. She excelled in sports and interacting with others. By the age of 4 her mother was removed from their household. Things had begun falling apart slowly. Carrie lived with friends of hers for some time. Toa had made it out of preschool and right into Kindergarten.
Those years were the years where she got two little sisters, Jessica and Nao. Having grown up entirely apart from them she was raised like an only child. During those years she would visit her mother and sisters on the weekend in their apartment, which today haunts Toa. Toa wishes things had never played out the way they did, if only her mother hadn't made that fatal mistake which was her, Toa, that mistake.
The sisters never quite bonded like one would expect. Instead they went about acting like friends and teaching each other what they knew. The youngest of the family attended preschool together with few visits from Toa. In every way Toa thought she was a far better being than the others but either way she cared for them when her mother wouldn't. She took on making breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the three of them. Slowly she learned that helping others made her overjoyed.
Now Toa looks back on those days, wishing, dreaming, and hoping that it all was different somewhere else. Some other time, but mostly that no one else would have to experience what she had. The bombshell that came tore her apart more than she even expected.
