The Purge, they call it. It started in 2022, when the U.S.A was reborn. It's the year I did it.

And I'll never forget it.

2023.

It's the day of the Annual Purge. Everyone has to participate, you can stay home and do nothing; that's participation, but you can't not be a part of it.

Nobody is safe.

The Purge takes over all the news channels, being tuned in to CNN, I see the Purge countdown: 2 hour. I've decided this year to be well prepared, unlike last year. Yeah, it was a little dumb to leave 2 hours before, but my trip would be short.
I walk to Wal-Mart with my little red backpack with white spots, which carries my gun. I grab a knife which I was lucky to find because it was the last one. I grab some ammo for my 22 Magnum Mini Revolver and two bags of Doritos for munchies. On my way to the register I pick up a magazine and a can of Arizona Iced Tea. The cashier smiled at me,

"Oh my, these Purge hours. Someone as sweet as you shouldn't have to worry 'bout a thing."

I blushed a little and tucked some red hair behind my eyes.

"Is that yuh' natural coluh' darlin?" She was quite Southern.

I looked at my auburn hair like I didn't know it was red.

"Yes. Are you going to be safe during the Purge..." I looked at her name tag, "...Gladys?"

"My husband hunts deer and such. I'm always safe with him."

I smiled as she rang the price for the last item, "That's very sweet."

"We were high school sweethearts."

I'd always wanted that for myself, but I didn't even have a boyfriend in high school. Gladys handed me then bags and I payed.

"Have a safe Purge, darlin'"

"You too, Gladys"

I put the knife in my right combat boot and took my 22 Magnum from my backpack and put it in my left combat boot. The ammo went in the boot's pockets which most people thought didn't actually work. Both pockets were stuffed with ammo and I drank some Arizona.

Then a voice came out of nowhere:
"This is your emergency..."
"Run" I whisper to myself
"...broadcast system..."
"Run."
"...announcing the commencement of the Annual Purge..."
"Run."
..."At the siren, all emergency..."
"Run"
"...services will be suspended..."
I'm yelling and running, "Run!"
"...for 12 hours. Your government..."
"Run!"
"...thanks you for your participation"
I can see my door. I'm smiling and running and crying.
That's when a van pulls up and throws me in.
